City Navigator v8

Got the update DVD, installed to the PC and launched into the unlock process. Now, if you haven't been through this little drill on Garmin’s site in a while, then you're in for a treat. In the interests of creating a secure method to protect the proprietary nature of their cartography and software, I give them an A+ for presenting an unlock conundrum to gain access to the maps now so complicated as to no doubt confuse and intimidate some, including me and I’ve done this numerous times going back to v4. Just to make sure I was getting the whole enchilada, after obtaining a new unlock code for v8 ($75.00) and unlocking the maps with the Unlock Wizard, I re-selected all of North America and Canada to re-load onto my 2G card, only to get the message, “The following maps have not been unlocked (it lists ALL the map areas selected), do you want to transfer them anyway?” Now, what the hell does that mean? I selected yes, and right now I’m in the middle of the 2 hour+ transfer process, but what am going to wind up with?

Hi Al,

I upgraded from V5 to V8 and notice no particular difference as of yet,
atleast not in the Pacific Northwest.

I wish they would have included an updated address list of BMW Dealerships too, but that was not included.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to use the maps if it thinks they are locked.

You will only have the basemap.

Call Garmin's support line.

After spendind too long on hold, they are actually very good at resolving issues.

False alarm!...figured it out. The first time I unlocked the maps, it unlocked them for the Nav I, which is the one for which the original Coupon Code was for, but one I don't have anymore. Went back into it for the Nav II and all is well...transfering as we speak.

Mike, for $75.00 I hope you just haven't run up on the data upgrade yet. That's what we get for wanting to be on the "bleeding edge" of technology I guess though, right?
