Thumbs up Best 2610 (aka Nav II) Mod

I recently read about blanking the IR window on the 2610 to prevent spurious input signals by low sun angles, particulary from behind. Cut a piece of black electrical tape to suit and wow, what a difference. Actually think I like the GPS now! Stays on the set map scale now until I change it. That alone is just great. Still learning, but such an easy mod.

Behold and learn more:

Press Menu -> 'Options' -> tab 'General'
Press Menu again -> 'Disable remote'

Now the IR eye has been disabled. This way you also are free from the effects of sunlight....

Nice tip. However, I have never had this problem on my NAVII. The problem I have is that my NAVII looses satellite more than I think it should while riding in the outlining foothills around Northern California.

I ordered an external antenna to see if my problem goes away.

Smile Disable IR Port

Thanks Erwin, that's an even better tip. I'll try that as well. Cheers

Mark,

Have you already tried the 'hard-reset' ?

Turn the Nav II / 2610 off. Press buttons 'page' and 'menu' and keep them depressed while turning the Nav II on. Beware: this will delete your routes, waypoints and tracks (you can download them to your computer first). The maps are on the CF card and will not be deleted.

The hard reset will clear your Nav II's memory and will put everything back to the state in which it left the factory. The first time you switch it on again it can take up to 10 minutes to find the satellites again.

The hard reset is often done by Garmin dealers and resellers when satellite reception gives problems.

Erwin,

It takes 10 minutes because the GPS "thinks" it is in Taiwan, at least that is where mine was when I first turned it on. (May go there on a hard reset.) I slewed it to where I was and it found the satellites really quick.

Erwin;
Thanks for the information.

I mounted my new external antenna today and did some testing and the new antenna works well. I posted more information in a new thread in the GPS forum:

Note: I will be back in Amsterdam in early August enjoying the night life after work.. , etc, etc, etc...
