Rear light cluster

Why is there a twin filament bulb in the middle of the rear light cluster when there are only 2 wires supplying the power just for the rear light.

Not really sure why they do this other than it's probably cheaper for them to simply stock one part rather than two. Especially when this may be one of the very few applications where a single filament bulb would work. What most of us have done is to connect that second, unused, filament to the brake light circuit to add a little extra illumination when applying the brake.

Re: Rear light cluster

I use the center 21W filament for two purposes. Normally it is just a third brake light but during heavy rain or fog I use it as rear fog light.

I added a diode in the circuit so that when I flip on the fog light switch in the dash only the center bulb goes into bright mode.
