Re: Left turn into motorcycle

Wow ... At least he was able to get up a walk around ... I guess it could have been a car or an 18 wheeler and the SUV driver instead of the motorcycle rider would have paid a price for there lack of attention ... Hope he makes a full recovery !

Re: Left turn into motorcycle

What's the speed limit on that street? It looked like the motorcyclist was covering ground quickly. Just wondering if he was traveling well over the posted limit, not that it clears the SUV driver of any fault.

Re: Left turn into motorcycle

Both had eyes and brakes. One or both may have been distracted. The SUV presents a large profile, the squid not so much, especially against a potentially complex background.

The SUV's decision to turn left was made well before the collision, and maybe the cage driver was looking into the turn to complete their maneuver, not at the oncoming lane that may have already been cleared in their mind.

The passenger exits the SUV, the driver appears to remain seated. Perhaps the passenger blocked the driver's view at the last moment. Hard to know it all.

Bad for both now. Hope the rider is ok.

Re: Left turn into motorcycle

Another case of technically being the driver's fault, but 100% avoidable accident if the rider wasn't riding with his head up his ass. That SUV driver telegraphed that turn for a good 5 seconds and it's clear the moto rider never went neutral throttle or covered his brake until it was way too late. Just another case where, if the rider was riding even a bit defensively, they would have either avoided the accident altogether or it would have been far less serious.

Unfortunately, this style of riding is far more the norm than the exception and probably the single biggest reason there are so many two vehicle crashes involving motorcyclists.

Re: Left turn into motorcycle

You can never put enough lights on the front of your bike. The number one motorcycle vehicle collision on the streets involve left turning vehicles. Hate to be nit picky, but the motorcyclist had very little protective gear on, not that that was the cause of the crash, but it sure can't hurt to have the proper protection. I went down a couple of weekends ago just pulling out into an intersection from a stop making a left turn and hit gravel that I did not see. Bike went down and no injuries (I could not have been going more than 5-7 mph), but if I did not have the proper jacket or boots on, I would still be picking gravel out of my elbow and and ankle. "ATGATT" - can't say it enough!

Re: Left turn into motorcycle

Not passing judgement
After looking at the video several times I was wondering
1. If the motorcyclist was familiar with that intersection and light. The light changed about 5-8 seconds from time of impact. So maybe his speed was geared to making the light before it changed.
2. Left turn driver also seemed to have anticipated on-coming traffic to stop allowing the turn to be completed. From camera position I can't tell if motorcycle was only vehicle on other side of light.
Seems like both drivers were reading each other minds wrong . . . is he stopping . . . is his turn going to be complete in time to make the light. Hope injuries were not serious seeing he was able to walk around. Driver might have been in shock and remained in SUV.

Re: Left turn into motorcycle

That was a really crappy left turn on the SUV driver's part - on several levels. He/she meandered into that turn, cutting the corner for a painfully-long time, rather than making a nice, clean left turn. It makes no difference in the end, but it seems to me the driver was clueless or impaired. And yes, I agree - the rider was going much faster than the traffic around him and def. could have lessened the severity of the crash, or avoided it altogether. It's easy to judge from the armchair!

Just hoping the driver gets cited and the rider is OK.

Re: Left turn into motorcycle

Taking a close look, I think the SUV is actually in a turn lane up to the last second. The paint is just worn off the pavement. So considering that, the rider has little if any time to react when he realizes the SUV has not seen him. He does have the brake light on when he hits and it looks like the two streets meet at an angle, not perpendicular. Hard to judge accurately from that view.
