Ken Meese IBR Update

I have an official condition report for Ken’s status for you:

Ken is going to be fine with only a broken right collar bone to show for a low-side crash and tumble on I-95 south of Fredericksburg, VA early this morning. His recollection is that the storm passed through ahead of him and the pavement was excessively wet. He remembers cruising at highway speed with the intention of returning to rally HQ with all of his bonii collected for the leg. He had plenty of time and had stopped for an hour rest at a rest area before the accident, and had time for more stops when needed (I talked to him on the phone when he woke up in the rest area and he sounded good and ready to finish his ride). He said, “the back end of the bike started to come around from a loss of traction”. He does not know what caused the loss of traction, but he and the bike came to rest on the highway. Good people gave him and his bike assistance and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Ken is in good spirits and obviously disappointed with the outcome of his rally ride. He is thankful for all of the support he is getting and wants to thank the rally staff and volunteers for making this event so much fun to participate in.

Best regards,

Re: Ken Meese IBR Update

I know it's disappointing for every rider who has great aspirations, but since Ken is our guy, it makes it more personal. Sounds like a case of road film low side. Tricky stuff. Sounds like Ken is better off than after Wylie Coyote finished with him in 2011. Wishing Ken a speedy recovery and a podium finish in 2015.

Re: Ken Meese IBR Update

The news showed that about 4 inches of rain fell in that area yesterday. I wonder if running the car tire on the rear caused the bike to hydro plane more then if he had a bike tire on it.

Re: Ken Meese IBR Update

Ernie,

Thanks for the additional details.
Saw the initial report, early this morning.
The K1600 forum had a note Dayle posted on her Blog site.
I'm glad he wasn't injured any more than he was.

Ken,

Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Re: Ken Meese IBR Update (7/13)

Update:

Ken is being released from the hospital as I write this note. He is in good spirits and not in any significant pain. He is understandably disappointed in the outcome of the rally. Being an engineer he has been spending this break from riding to analyze the cause of the crash through what he can remember. Before he comes home he will visit the site of the fall and get a better look at the road and features.

A friend from the LD community, close to Ken's hospital, contacted us and stopped by this morning. She has the wherewithal to help transport Ken's bike to his niece's house is Alexandria, VA. Ken is arranging transport of the bike, through the insurance carrier, back to his home in Oxnard, CA.

Ken is grateful for the thoughts and positive comments coming his way. Thank you all for your support.

Re: Ken Meese IBR Update

Hey guys,

Thanks for the support and good wishes.

I'm doing pretty well, considering.

The broken collarbone required nothing more than Ibuprofen, which I'm mostly weaned off already. So now it's just sore and annoying not being able to use that arm. Six weeks of that sounds like fun . . .

I'm currently relaxing with Dayle on the Oregon Coast, where she's attending a professional Writer's conference. Gotta support her goals and ambitions, much as she supports mine.

The bike is safely stored at my niece's in Alexandria. Travel insurance will ship it home.

The bike looks rough, but runs. It'll get put back together.

Much like me . . .

Looking forward to seeing everyone at CCR next month, where I should be able to actually use that arm . . .

Re: Ken Meese IBR Update

I have to give Kudos to Derek Dickson, who rode a smart route and simply kept moving. Sometimes, the Epic Ride is just putting your head down and getting it done. Well ridden, my friend.

And a huge thanks to Gwen, who showed up at my hospital, and didn't back down until both I and the bike were safely ensconced at my niece's house. She's a trooper, and her exuberance and get-it-done attitude was just what I needed.

Pay it forward, folks . . .
