The Challenge of Transporting the Lockheed Blackbird to Area 51

In February 1962, the first A-12 Archangel (SR-71 Blackbird predecessor) was moved from Lockheed's SkunkWorks Plant in Burbank, California to Area 51 for final assembly and flight testing.

On of the main engineers, Dorsey G. Kammerer, documented the move. His family found the photos, and provided them to Roadrunners Internationale, whose mission is to preserve the history of the aviation pioneers and programs that developed the U-2, A-12 and YF-12 reconnaissance aircraft.

The first flight was made on 26 April 1962 by Lockheed Test Pilot Lou Schalk. This A-12 Archangel would eventually complete 322 flights before retiring to storage in Lockheed Site 2 at Palmdale, CA. This aircraft is now on display at the Blackbird Air Park in Palmdale, the first of a whole flock of Blackbirds.

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

And here's an interesting anecdote from Major Brian Shul, about flying the SR-71 Blackbird.

Amazing technology built, flown, and supported by amazing people.

Re: The Challenge of Transporting the Lockheed Blackbird to Area 51

The SR-71 has to be one of my favorites. While stationed in Okinawa (1972-73) I'd sit on the roof of my house at the foot of Kadena Air Base and watch them take off. They were called Habu's over there after an indigenous, but poisonous snake. Everywhere else people called it the Blackbird.

Thanks for posting that.

Take care,
Chris
