Re: Space Shuttle Fly Over

Hey, we didn't get an F-16 escort!

But we did have Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly on hand. What a wonderful picture - made the water come to my eyes...

The media said the altitude was 1500 ft. AGL but I know it was WAY, WAY lower. You could see the 747 Captain salute them from the port side as he banked to the left. I could swear I saw a little "wing wiggle" as he left the area.

Re: Space Shuttle Fly Over

I got to watch both passes from the top of my hospital (14 stories) just east of downtown Sac. Way cool, and as usual, I forgot my camera.

Twin rudders, wings and front intakes tell me that was an F22 escort.

Re: Space Shuttle Fly Over

Glad you enjoyed it. The SCA made several passes over JSC and Houston before landing at Ellington Field. Local police estimate at least 200,000 people visited the Endeavour during her overnight stay at EFD.

Take care of her out there.

Re: Space Shuttle Fly Over

What a fantastic thing to see, I almost got the chance to see the launch of Endeavor as I flew back from Mexico. The timing was right I made sure that I had a window seat, not over a wing on the starboard side, the captain patched the NASA sequence through, I had my camera ready and the launch was postponed.
Missed chance.
Speaking of which, I can't help wondering if humans would be more established in space if the space shuttle had not been. Nasa had plenty of plans to use further developments of the Apollo program, the so-called Apollo Applications Program, wet workshops in space, a manned Venus flyby, a trip to Mars.
A permanent Moon base.
Or the big Gemini program, based on Apollo and Gemini hardware.
All the dreams and hopes we had in the sixties and seventies.
I think that the shuttle program was in the end a big fail, too costly and not very effective.
And now? Well looks like it's back to Apollo after all, if we can find the money.

Without men civilization would last untill the oil needs changing.

Re: Space Shuttle Fly Over

Living on the west coast of Florida, on Lake Tarpon, we generally got a 5 minute alert that the shuttle was landing. A double sonic boom as it passed over our house. It was a little high and we didn't see it, but would then turn on the TV as it was getting ready to land. 90 miles in about 5 minutes.

We did get to watch a night launch up close and my first day launch was the Challenger.

Re: Space Shuttle Fly Over

In 1983 my wife and I took our then-infant son a couple hours west to Wright-Patterson AFB, where one of the early shuttles was stopping on its return trip to Florida. I believe this was in the early stages of the shuttle flights, when they all landed in California and then were transported back to Florida. We have a photo of our son in front of the orbiter somewhere in the archives. I may have to go dig that out...

Seeing the 747-orbiter combo fly low over WPAFB and the city of Fairborn, OH was an amazing sight.
