Just Play Along

September 18, 8:45 pm. Springdale, Utah near the entrance to Zion National Park. Four BMWs are lined up under the porte cochere of the Best Western. A lone rider (me) stands near an R 1200 RT. Enter Stage left a gray haired gentlemen in his mid-60s.

THE DIALOGUE:
(Older Gentleman): Hi, Im Gary.

(Me): Pleased to meet you, Gary. Im Moot.

Gary: Moot, eh? Is that your real name?

Moot: No, Gary. Thats a nickname.

Gary: Thats a pretty nice Honda ya got there.

Moot: Why thanks, Gary. Its pretty much top of the line---best bike Honda makes.

Gary: Whyd ya chose a Honda instead of a Harley?

Moot: Well, Gary, what I really wanted was a BMW but theyre pretty pricey.

Gary: BMW huh? Never knew BMW made motorcycles. Are you sure?

Moot: I suppose I could be wrong, Gary. Maybe its actually Mercedes or Porsche; but Im pretty sure one of those German car companies makes a motorcycle.

Gary: I ride too, ya know?

Moot: Thats fantastic, Gary. What kind of bike do you have?

Gary: Oh, I dont actually have a bike but I took the motorcycle course to get my license a few years ago.

Moot: Good for you, Gary. Well, listen, if you ever decide to buy one, look at these Hondas. They make great motorcycles. Listen, Gary, I gotta go check in; you have a great evening.

Gary: Ok, well thanks. Nice chatting with you.

Ya just gotta play along with it. It is quite entertaining and keeps any element of frustration entirely at bay.

Re: Just Play Along

Is this what they mean when they say, "You meet the nicest people on a Honda"?

I had an almost identical conversation a few years ago at a 7-11 standing next to my red Ferrari. (a 1993 Mazda RX7)

I was in a parking lot an spoke to a guy taking paper work out of the trunk.
He asked if I was going to the breakfast meeting. I said NO I was off to the Doctor.

He ask what car was mine I said i'am on the bike. His expression changed.

Then I said it'sa BMW and his only had 1problem. He said what is it. i responded it has to many wheels.
