Having a bad day, feeling insignificant? You're right - you aren't worth squat:

Re: 27 Reasons why YOU don't matter

By the way, Joe, the man in the picture lives in Orlando and is a super nice guy. I (me and 49 others) spent a weekend with him two years ago in Deland, Fl., doing a special skydive in his honor on the 50th anniversary of his leap.

"Aug. 16, 1960 photo made available by the U.S. Air Force, Col. Joe Kittinger steps off a balloon-supported gondola at an altitude of 102,800 feet. In freefall for 4.5 minutes at speeds up to 614 mph and temperatures as low as -94 degrees Fahrenheit, he opened his parachute at 18,000 feet." He claims though that he was pushed...

...and, I'll bet he was wearing a Rolex!

I had the same opportunity about 20 years ago - that man is the definition of cool. His speed record STILL stands: 614 mph. The sound barrier is 768 mph, or approximately 1 mile in 5 seconds. THAT puts it into perspective.

Highest free fall.

Highest manned balloon ascent. (with 99% of the atmosphere below him...)

We don't need no steenking airplanes! http://stratocat.com.ar/artics/excelsior-e.htm

The next attempt to break his records should be in about a month - he is a consultant to the project: http://www.redbullstratos.com/

I'm pretty sure he was. He comes out to Deland from time to time and watches us skydive. Always a gentleman.
