Hot in northern Michigan.

Wow, the last couple of days the temps were in the mid to upper 90's. I don't know how you guys in the hot southern states do it, impossible to stay cool. What a relief to have the temps back down in the 70'a to low 80's!

106 on the temp gauge, the other day while riding down the interstate. Cool temp jacket is getting a workout. Cooler temps next week.

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying " I'll try again tomorrow".

Re: Hot in northern Michigan.

I rode up your way Friday June 29th & belive it or not I decided to wear my winter gear for insulation against the high temps. My lower gear was Simpson long Carbon X under garment, jeans & Olympia mesh pants. My upper gear was a wicking t-shirt, Simpson long Carbon X garment, 26 to 78 layer Kevlar vest, T-shirt, Mesh Jacket & a Olympia Hi- Vis Vest.

I think I reached max. body temp in Ohio about 1pm. I had to put my rain gear on just south of Toledo & ride to Ann Arbor Mi. in and out of rain. The heat didn't bother me one bit. I drank less than 12oz of water in the 15 hours it took me to get to my sisters house. I rode the back roads from Beckley WV all the way to north of Dexter MI.

Dave, you are not drinking enough! Check your pee... Dark yellow and you are getting dehydrated. I would have been on the side of the road, passed out...

Re: Hot in northern Michigan.

I agree drink more water. Last year I was filling my tank and another ST1100 pulled into the gas station, it was rare enough an occurrence that I walked over to greet him. He would have had a tip over had I not been there to help steady the bike. After talking he had ridden from west of Ottawa to east of Quebec City on just the morning coffe, it was over 30 C. Once off the bike he was unsteady on his feet, I bought two bottles of water and we sat in the shade next 15 minutes talking. I tend to stop every 2 or so hours for a short break and water.

Re: Hot in northern Michigan.

I drove through Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California yesterday. It was between 97 to 115F on the display.

I think I was competing with my LT on drinking power. I was drinking as much fluids as the LT was drinking gas. I realized having Gatorade helped a little bit. I was doing just fine in the regular BMW airflow jacket. The secret was to sweat just enough and allow slow breeze to flow through the helmet and jacket's to allow for sweat dry.

My wife complained a lot about hot air. I imagine once it reaches above 97F (normal human body temperature) it gets difficult to cool down because the wind does not help. Beware, the passenger is in a lot more wind and pain in the rear seat than the rider. Be courteous to them

Light gold pee when I went at lunch in Ohio but I did drink about 4oz of lemonade when I had lunch. I just wasn't thirsty enough to drink any more. For some reason the heat has never bothered me.

I was sitting at my sisters place on the lake (drinking a ice cold beer at about 100 F) when they asked me if I was going swimming and I told them I guess it's time I get my gear & long underwear off & put my swim suit on. I pulled up my gear & jeans to show them my long underwear & they thought I was a nut and they would be right.

I agree you are a nut!!! LOL!!!

My wife and I rode over to Alpena then up to Cheboygan and we roasted, we tried to wear our gear but couldn't take it, too hot. Kept the helmets on though!!

Dave, wish we could have got together!

I set up a RTE in Frankenmuth for Sat. Sept. 22nd while I was in MI. It will be at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant at 11:30 am. This is the week of Octoberfest so clear your calender & bring the wife.

Re: Hot in northern Michigan.

Dave doesn't drink much water or anything else when he rides. He makes up for it on the days he doesn't!

On the trip we took to Pensacola in June, Dave probably didn't drink 3 bottles of water the whole trip. It amazes me how few times I see him take a drink. I wear a CamelBak and have to refill it at nearly every fuel stop. I've always heard, "Listen to your body. It'll tell you when to take a drink." Mine talks to me about every 20 miles. Dave gets a whole lot more miles per bottle than I do!

Like my grandmother, who died a few years ago on her 95th birthday, Dave gets cold if temps dip below 90! Its going to be mid-80s here the rest of this week. Guess Dave will be breaking out the cold-weather survival gear!

Hey, Admins! We need a "smilie" for "cold" or "freezing" right about now. See what you can do, OK? Thanks!

Re: Hot in northern Michigan.

I've made essentially the same comments over several years
on the LT, ADVRider, and now GTL forums.
Here's the latest thread on how to make the heat irrelevant:
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...=803155&page=3

Spent the last three days riding in VA and NC*
where the heat indexes were in the 105-115 degrees.
Fayetteville, NC to Alexandria and back on Friday.
660 miles.
Left at 0300.
Got home at 2230.
Saturday, left at 1000 for Raleigh to change the rear tire.
Got back at 1530.
Left at 0730, this morning for a breakfast ride.
Returned at 1430.
Since I purchased my Veskimo personal cooling system five summers ago,
I'm more worried about the bike overheating than myself.
The intense heat adds one, maybe two recharges of ice on a long day trip.
Otherwise, the heat and humidity aren't factors.
12V power isn't an issue, either.
I carry a lithium-ion battery pack and AA batteries, as back up power.

That Veskimo sounds like an awesome deal. Luckily the temps are back down to reasonable up here in MI!!
