Agree...my rule is don't ride in the rain unless there's no choice. No worries about the bike...worry about the poor drivers around me.

In the PNW, our rule is ride in the rain unless there's no choice.

+1. Dan, please see what you can do to send some of that rain to the midwest. We are way, way behind on rain. Our yards are brown but more importantly the farmers are losing big time.

Dan,
Bad weather is a variable... for riders, it is called the riding environment. Some experts say there are no bad weather days just bad gear days. In Florida I'm not too sure how that ideology works out. I rode through the state to the FL Key's and back to Clearwater in March. I was in my AGATT Aerostich FF helmet .I got by just fine and comfortable. However , that was March not sure if I could do this in late June.

Re: No riding today!

I'll admit it. I'm a fair weather rider. Riding for me is optional and one of life's pleasure to be enjoyed, not suffered through. I own a good rain suit and have worn it all day when "necessary." It wasn't cold and with the proper attire, not that uncomfortable, except for wet hands.

I do have a waterproof, air conditioned SUV that has 4-wheel drive when necessary and I love to drive it too, when it is so hot you can fry an egg on the sidewalk or it is raining.

Yesterday we had about 8 inches of rain and spending the time indoors with my wife, reading a good book or watching some of the Olympic qualifying events was much higher on my enjoyment scale than riding in the rain.....

Today we get to clean up the mess from yesterday. Lots of trees down, flooding and a general mess. A good wake up call for Florida. Haven't had a hurricane in about 5 years.

Batten down the hatches and good luck to all those in the path of Debby.
Looks like it will be mostly a rain event, but watch for rising tides.

Be prepared; Keep enough ammo.

+1 I have to agree with Dano here, well put.

Not to mention the saftey factor involved, 4 wheels handle hydroplanning a lot better than 2.

At the begining of the month the wife and I rode the Blueridge and spent one day in rain and fog, rode from Fancy Gap to Little Switzerland. It was a tense ride and would not do it again. ( Lots of slow curves ) Did I mention it was 50 degrees.

Re: No riding today!

Things are pretty soggy up here in NE Florida. I've emptied my OFFICIAL ACE HARDWARE RAIN GAUGE twice in the last 2 days. It tops out at 6" and has been full to the brim on both occasions. So our two day total is 12+ inches with more to come. I figure it'll be at least Sat before I can even think of navigating the bike across the 30 or 40 yards of soggy grass to the driveway. However it doesn't really matter 'cause there are so many roads closed with flooding that ya can't go anywhere anyway.

Re: No riding today!

I spent my weekend in rain gear,........ at the marina,

Got a call on Sunday, "your dock box is in the water"
usually the concrete dock is level with the deck of the Calypso,
that large white object under the debree is the top of another boat,
it's been a hell of a weekend

Re: No riding today!

It has been a real mess in Florida for the past few days and it sounds like many are having serious problems. It was just barely a tropical storm, but it was stationary for several days and a lot of the ground is super saturated.

Lynn, it sounds like you are now getting the brunt of it so don't get antsy... The bike can wait.

Hans, be careful. You know how easy it can be to get hurt.

In a few days it will pass and then it's back to normal till the next big storm. Three more months....to go.

In the mist of winter I wish for FL heat.
I am not making light of your situation but you had some serious weather the past 4 or 5 days. Hope everyone came out unscaved. Also hope the cleanup is quick and your riding routine is back to normal.

Re: No riding today!

Hey Dan,

Saw Bayshore drive covered in water on the evening news, unbelievable. Hope you guys dry out soon.

We're sizzling here in Atlanta. Just got a request from the electric company to curb power use from 2pm to 7pm. The weather service has forecast record highs for our area. Got on my bike after lunch and it's reading 116 and the seat just about cooked my nuts.

Re: No riding today!

Greg,

You'll have to come down to Florida to cool off! It only got up to 94.1 on my bike.

I got a message from a friend in WV and it hit 97. That's in a city 2,500 feet above sea level.

I just got out of the local fish tank where the water was around 74 degrees. Got to do 4 dives in there today. Nice and cool.
