Ads Linked To Words In Posts.

What's the deal with all these commercial ads popping up these ad balloons within posts?

Is that really necessary? Move your mouse over one while navigating and you get a pop-up. More than a little distracting.

Go to 'Motorcycle Seats (General)'

Mouse over the words 'new' and 'pay' - you get a monster.com popup.

EDIT: you also will get it over 'pay' in this post

I don't think that it is a forum problem; you appear to have something installed on your computer causing these ads. While I do know what you're talking about, I don't see any ads on Windows, Mac, or the iPad.

Here's a scan just completed on my system. Malwarebytes and MSE both came up clean.

I get 'em too, Steve. It's a product of the server owners' site setup, I'm bettin'. Someone told me that a donation conveniently eliminates ads on the forum. I haven't tested that just yet. Thinkin' about it tho!!

I'm not sure where my post went. But, I am not a paying member and I don't have ads.
Now I am wondering if maybe my security settings in my browsers aren't allowing the ads to appear.

I was able to duplicate the ads by turning down my security settings.
Here's how you should be able to block the ads:

I agree Steve, this site has unfotunately gone commercial. Your option is ad blocking tech.

Re: Ads Linked To Words In Posts.

You all ain't seen nothing yet.

Just go here to see what the future of this site will be: KonTour Seat Modification! - BMW K1600 Forum : BMW K1600 GT and GTL Forums

We're being "broken in" by the new owners of the site. Their other sites are just FULL of ads and such. Really obnoxious and 90% of the ads have nothing to do with motorcycles at all.

I mean, do I really need Proactive zit cream? Yup - it's true... To large corporate advertisers their rates are so cheap they just can't refuse throwing a few dollars at them.

We've had it VERY good for a VERY long time.

The funny thing is that when I go to that site I somehow tend to be capable of NOT looking at the ads at all! I think it may have to do with sensory overload, and my feeble brain is able to tune them out completely.

OR.... maybe they really do work that well and I'll be shopping for zit cream next time I visit Walgreens.

Re: Ads Linked To Words In Posts.

If that's accurate - their site is going to lose subscribers.

It's not a problem with them having ads on their site. They'd like to add some profits for their labor and cover their expenses. I get that.

The problem is THE WAY they're allowing advertisements. Populating pop-ups throughout someone's post is the most invasive, obnoxious method of advertising. If you modify my posts - I simply stop posting and reading on that site - period.

They'll either find another way - and soon - or I'm gone. I don't expect my leaving will mean squat to them. However, I absolutely WILL make certain that others that may have been interested in this site are made aware of the problems and they - of course - should make their own decisions of where they want to get information on BMWs. This is hardly the only option and no one else is doing this kind of invasive advertising.

What advertising? It's simple Firefox with ad blocker or IE8 with their ad blocker.

LOL, when I moused over "Firefox" (which was double underlined and in bold) in your post I got a clickable ad for Monster.com.

...and I'm running the latest version of Firefox with ad blocker - maybe I need to turn it up or sumpin'

Next think you know I'll be shopping for Depends along with my zit cream!

I had the same experience as Ron - moused over Firefox and got a pop-up ad for Monster.com I also have the latest version of Firefox. How does one increase/decrease the sensitivity to these, or is that even possible?

It's ad block plus - Not sure if there is more than one ad blocker?
But once I added the ad on, no more pop ups......

These ads suck

They were really slowing down the performance of the site on my Hackintosh computer. If you have Firefox or Safari add an add-on called Do Not Track.... It gets rid of the ads and keeps companies from tracking you. Plus it speeds up the web pages when you are on a slow connection like I am right now.

It's good to see that there are remedies for the adds. I remember reading Randy's post stating that paying members wouldn't be so pestered or "They will be adding some advertising, but there will be less for registered members and even less for supporting members". http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66531
Is that really how it all washed out?

I did not do anything except add these two browsers. I use one for Pandora to keep it running in the background. The other for all other web sites.

I did not add anything else and I don't get any pop-ups. I do get an ad at the top that is not a problem. The site is as it was and actually runs faster for me.

Hi Dan,

Like I said, nice to see there are remedies, really! I don't always enter this forum from home. Work computers don't allow for changes of any kind. Just saying that being a supporting member I'd rather not have to deal with ads. I'll be rethinking what it means to be supportive now that there are ads.

Re: Ads Linked To Words In Posts.

Jer,

I can understand how you feel. As a supporting member, there should be limits. I still see this forum though as one that has saved my butt on so many occasions that I have really lost count.

Aside from the virtual friendships (some real!) this site has saved me a lot of money.

Every mod that I made on my K1200LT was because of the knowledge here. Learning how to initially ride that big fat pig was learned here. I probably would not own my K1600 if it wasn't for this forum and the list goes on and on. Me personally, I'll continue to contribute at least an "hour of local shop time" every year because, to me, it's only right.

I strongly believe in playing it forward.

Bingo. Exacly why I didn't renew my support.
The problem is with this site using things like ADSENSE. And the Admin claims no knowledge of the issue because THEY don't see the ADs.

Not sure... I felt obligated to support the site in the past because of the value I received and the fact that it was run by members who did not make a profit. In fact, they probably lost money on the deal. I don't really know if a profit was made, but it could not have been enough to justify the time. That I'm sure.

I still sort of feel that I should support the site because I the value I still get, but now that it is a commercial site, I just don't know. I'll have to see what transpires before it's time to renew. I don't want to be the last sucker!

I feel the same way, Dan. My annual "gold' membership would have been renewed this month, however with the changes, I held off. Obviously someone was watching sufficiently closely to make certain that when I did not renew, the gold level indication of my support was timely removed from my posts. Quite frankly, it is not about the money. I still value the site but really need to see which way the wind is blowing. I'm a generous guy but do not normally make voluntary contributions to support otherwise commercial for-profit enterprises. I value my BMW dealer and mechanic but do not voluntarily pay more than they charge.

Re: Ads Linked To Words In Posts.

Right now this site is tracking everyone with 1 ad network and 5 tracking companies.
If you do not use an ad blocker you info and habit are all over the web. You do realize the ads on the side of the page on commercial sites are targeted to you as you surf the web.

Re: Ads Linked To Words In Posts.

Keeping this thread alive... Tried to surf this site the other day on my iPad and got hammered with ads. I enjoy having a Tutu ad or Tampon ad pop up on the top of the homepage.... Not to mention the bubble rollovers.

I come to this site to read GUY stuff. Don't want to see shitty ads on my iPad.

At home I have every blocking tool I can find to stop ads and tracking. I have Ad Blocker Plus, Google Sharing Blocker and Do Not Track Plus... I need all of these tools just to surf this site.

Re: Ads Linked To Words In Posts.

I am running OS something or other on my MAC and I don't see the underlines or links on this thread. However, I went to one of my replies in the Ride Tales forum and noticed that in my post the word "won't" was in green and double underlined. Passing the cursor over the word gave me a pop-up for a chance to win a Chevrolet. Is this coming from my computer or is it being implanted by this site? If it's on my end, is there anything I can do?

Take care,
Chris

Re: Ads Linked To Words In Posts.

On my system, I find it odd that all post don't get green words,, and the green words don't play favorites. There is one right now in the "Community Announcements" at the top of the page, but, in this thread about ads I don't see one green word in any of the post.
One green word I saw had a little green box with an arrow in it.
I find it easy enough to avoid the green words, but I try to avoid any thing that look like a link any way. I didn't even know what the green words were until I read this thread.
