Zinc vs Detergent - not an oil thread as such

I just came across an article which may help in understanding the properties of both zinc and detergent in oils, and the reasons why oil formulations have changed in recent years. I am not wanting to promote an oil thread frenzy with this article, rather I'd like to think it may help some in making informed choices.

Excellent article! I saved a copy for future reference.

So I read the article and now have a question. Is ZDDP good or bad for the LT since it has a Catalytic converter? It seems like it would be good for the engine but bad for the exhaust..... I just bought some oil for the LT with ZDDP in it but have not yet installed it. Valvoline Racing Oil

I would rather preserve the valves over the CAT(my state does not do emmision checks - period). I don't think any of the oils with ZDDP has enough to damage a CAT or they would not have them on the market.

Good point. I will call Valvoline to verify and report back.

Re: Zinc vs Detergent - not an oil thread as such

I just spoke with an oil tech at Valvoline and he said they would not recommend using VR1 where a CAT is in place. He said the ZDDP level is at least 75% higher than their conventional oil which is already pretty high with ZDDP. He recommended the conventional oil instead.
