Worst vehicle to be behind.

Ok, not much of a tech thread but i've got to know what everyone's experience is. At the least, it will give me a little comparison game to play on those long stretches from Dallas to the Rocky Mountains.

My vote hands down goes to the Chevy Avalanche. I got behind one the other day on the highway in calm conditions and felt like I was taking a ride in a washing machine.

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

Well, the ones I avoid are:

1. Any vehicle carrying a ladder
2. Stock trailer. That rain on your windshield? That's not rain, friends .....

That's good advice for self preservation. Don't forget the big rigs, but especially when you smell tire smoke. I've had to dodge a "gator" once and never want to do it again.

Don't forget kids dump truck=visors down!

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

Are there and good vehicles to ride behind?

I agree with not riding behind a stock/cattle liner, I'm also very cautious riding behind any pickup with an open box just incase something flies out of the box and into my path.

Whenever possible (safety first) I leave all cagers behind me.

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

The Avalanche has a closed bed, that's what surprised me so much about the dirty air and turbulance it had. I agree with leaving the cages behind, but sometimes you're just stuck there for a while. I know we can get around faster than most, but I don't pass in a no-passing zone.

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

Other than "anything going slower than me that I can't get around"... :-)

The worst thing on the local highways are the small/medium sized box delivery trucks, the 15-20 footers.

Not only do they generate a nasty wake turbulence, they are usually driven by people who aren't necessarily professional truck drivers and drive their trucks like their '92 Corolla.

In the Seattle area, it's a Subaru driven by a guy in a hat. They will always be in the fast lane going exactly the speed limit. Grrrrrrrrrr.

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

My short list....
4 - Manure truck. (I live in Texas)

3 - Truck hauling a bunch of pigs.

2 - Cattle truck (and for a short while I thought it was drizzling!)

1 - I and 2 riding buddies were once stopped for new road construction. It was a nice 2 lane road but the pavement had been stripped off and the road surface was covered with caliche. The flag man made us wait until a water truck showed up and started spraying water on the fresh caliche. The flag man then waved us on! I always wondered if he did that on purpose. I was on my ST and the other two bikes were a Harley and a BMW RS. Not exactly off road bikes.

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

My worst 'vehicle' is not exactly a vehicle... In september / october, the cows are brought down from the higher grassfields or pastures in the mountains. It is always quite a happening, often a traditional village feast, the cows are decorated and wear their cow bells...
At some time, they always use the main roads. Trying to get through the patchwork of cow poo without you or the bike being smeared is a hazardous occupation, even more so in curves..., not to mention the smell...

Have a nice day!

- Toyota Prius or any other vehicle trying to hypermile. Makes for seriously slow and erratic driving.

- Anyone texting. I'd rather drive around drunks.

- Open-bed pickups, or any other type of open vehicle (stake bodies, dump trucks, trailers).

A turkey livestock truck. Give a wide berth when you pass. I know they can squirt a good 5 feet out the side at speed. Unfortunately, I know from personal experience. Lucky I was in a cage at the time.

I wish that this had been left in the RT section because my one and only bitch with my new RT is that it really shakes when I get behind a semi. My GS didn't shake like that. I've had several Ducatis. They didn't shake when I got behind a truck. The RT ought to be a great Interstate bike. So far mine isn't. (Yes, I've checked tire pressures and I have played with the windscreen. And head the bearings are fine.)

I've had an aluminum garbage can cover fly up out of an open box pick-up truck and come towards me at highway speed. Managed to dodge it - don't ask how - and was terrified.

And how about a convoy of 35 Harleys from your local chapter, with tattoed riders in Wechmacht helmets, cruising along at 45 mph on a narrow and twisty backroad with continuous yellow line for 15 miles?

And the tie goes to: Subarus (don't ask me why they are such poor drivers), Prius ( I think I understand their "I deserve to drive 55 in the fast lane" frame of mind) and rented RVs. Not to mention---oh never mind--there is not enough space on the forum.

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

A 35' trailer full of chicken heads, guts, and feet headed to the rendering plant that stops too fast and loses a quarter his load into the intersection over the front of his truck. And then another quarter of the load over the back of the trailer when the wave went the other direction. Much bad juju.

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

The rendering truck, hands down winner. Hooves up stench.

For you city slickers the rendering truck picks up field kills (cows, horses, pigs, sheep, etc) from farmers and ranchers then takes them to dog food plants when they get a full truck which can be several days worth of dead animals. If you ever get behind one you'll know it.

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

My top three:

1. Any vehicle with something attached to the roof with cheap bungee cords: I have seen the following: ladders, canoes/kayaks, bed mattresses and a couple of lobster pots. No! These items were not all attached on the same vehicle.

2. Tri-axle trucks with a load of coal or gravel.

3. A contractor's pick-up with toolboxes in the bed and the tailgate is down! Butt cheeks creased my saddle when a large tub used for mixing cement slid out the back and landed in front of me. It was early morning and I didn't see it coming until it hit the pavement.

Take care,
Chris

I apologize for a temporary hijacking. Do you experience the shake riding solo with or without the 49L topcase? Do you notice the shake when riding two up? I only notice the slipstream shimmy when riding solo with the 49L topcase. (2006 R1200RT)

Take care,

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

A friend of mine was on a trip with his wife and two sons. Wife and sons were asleep. He approaches a truck being towed from the back, pulls up behind it and yells something along the lines of OMG! We're going to die! Family wakes up and scream hysterically before they realize the truck is going the same way they are!

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

I was going to say any rock/gravel/dirt hauler in Florida prior to the housing downturn. They always seemed to have a steady stream of fine sand spilling out on the highway.

But there was this time on crowded I-95 in the Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. area when I was following a truck with a bouncing bed full of large 18-wheeler tires. One decided to make a get-a-way. Definitely increased the pucker factor!

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Re: Worst vehicle to be behind.

Around here, I would have to say farm equipment. Especially if they are pulling open wheeled wagons. Those big balloon tires pick up anything and everything.
