2 Gigs

I am still in the dark age with an old cell phone that only talks / receives and get voice mail. Ironic since most of my working career was with Motorola and a few other wireless companies!

I'm thinking of a new phone and have had T Mobile for so long they are begging me to get rid of the relic and want to give me one of the new models with everything in it and a wireless plan that includes unlimited data (2 Gigs a month then it slows down) for $50.00. How hard is it to go over 2 GIGS ???

If I listen to something like Pandora, will that use up most or all of the bandwidth quickly? How is the throughput measured?

Re: 2 Gigs

I was just talking about this with a friend that is contemplating the same thing. I use my iPhone to listen to Pandora at work most days. Realistically, 20 hours a week or so. Pick up e-mail once or twice a day. Not much web browsing, couple of hours a month. My data usage for last month was .7 gigs. So, unless you are going to listen constantly, the 2 gig plan should do you.

I have an unlimited plan but just ordered a phone for my wife and they don't offer that anymore. Got the 2 gig for her.

It will be interesting to see responses from heavier users.

Re: 2 Gigs

You have to work pretty hard to go over a 2 gig limit--as in downloading a LOT of videos, constant web surfing, etc.

Will you be able to use wi-fi for at least some of the Pandora use, or is that for when you're riding the bike/driving in the car? WI-fi use doesn't count towards your download "limit" so if you'll be using the device at home a lot, no worries.

The only time I've come CLOSE to 2Gigs was last December, and I was using my iPhone CONSTANTLY at my in-law's (no wi-fi) for connecting to the work VPN, surfing the net, etc.

Go with the 2GB plan, your carrier now HAS to notify you if you come close to the plan maximum, and worst-case scenario, you probably have to pay something like $10 per additional GB. You can always upgrade your plan later if it turns out you don't have enough.

Yesterday the Consumerist website had a story about an idiot who spent a month in Canada, was averaging 160+ text messages, plus a LOT of video downloads (hmmmm, I wonder if they were the pornographic variety). His plan (actually his sister's plan) didn't have international roaming, and despite multiple messages from T-mobile, he just continued on.

End of the month bill? $201,000

Re: 2 Gigs

We have Tmobile, 3 G2's and 1 HTC Sensation each with 'unlimited' data. Being a geezer I don't come anywhere near the slow down limit (200MB) mainly internet browsing and email. My kids who use their phones all the time, Pandora, Netflix, etc. used just 500MB and 600MB last billing period. Although I like my G2, I can't wait to trade up to the Sensation--much thinner, lighter and faster .

I saw that on the news last night. I guess T-Mobile lowered the bill to $2500....

Re: 2 Gigs

Thanks ALL for the helpfully information.... Now, I'm a little confused by the term Wi-Fi. I thought that that was like MY Wi-Fi (wireless Internet in the home connection?) If I am away from the house, where I intend to uses Pandora, to get to a Wi-Fi connection, wouldn't I have to log on to a Wi-Fi site. Not very seamless when riding the bike.

Re: 2 Gigs

Dan,

Lots of places like Hotels, McDonalds etc, have free Wi-Fi just like your home Wi-Fi. If you happen to stop somewhere and you want to use the phone for Web usage, set it to use Wi-Fi first and you won't get data usage.

BTW: 2 gig data plan should be plenty based on your usage thinking.

Re: 2 Gigs

I had my satellite radio fail over the winter and decided to use a smart phone to get Pandora instead in my truck and on the LT. My plan has unlimited data and before I retired I spent lots of time on the road, sometimes listening for 5 to 8 hours a day and using weather radar feeds constantly during bad weather. With a heavier than normal travel schedule, using data 20 to 25+ hours a week, I almost made 1.7 GB. I think you really need to be heavy into video to bring yourself near your limit. Go with the smaller plan and use your phone to monitor your usage just as you would with your calls.

With these new notification regulations you should not have a big exposure. Then when you become familiar with your usage you can adjust to what you need to do to get your best plan. I am forced to keep my plan going with many unused minutes because I will loose the unlimited data and former employer discounts if I change the minutes to a lower number, saving a few bucks. I went to CCR this year via Canada and I just turned off data when I crossed the border and used the phone normally for the 9 days I was in Canada paying a $.70 a minute rate. The bill was significant but to get the Canadian minutes on my plan I would have lost unlimited data and had a $10 a month charge from now on because they 'gave me' more minutes. Not a good deal. My point is don't worry about occasional usage charges because over the year you might be paying much more to avoid an occasional charge.

WiFi usage is basically free if you connect to a 'free to use' router similar to your home system. They are available in Starbuck, McDonalds and such. Some home cable providers give you access to their free routers. I have a Verizon phone but I have an AT&T home internet provider so I can use AT&T WiFi in airports and public places to reduce my 3G usage. I only use the to get a faster connection when available even though I have an unlimited data plan. A good example of that is my home. 3G is available but slower overall than my home network. Once you set up the home network my phone will use it automatically.

Re: 2 Gigs

Dan,
Somewhere on Verizon's website is a calculator of what you think you'll download and look at and how much data it will require. I couldn't tell you where that is. Might be under the section where a Verizon customer sets up a data plan. I had a data plan for a month when I was given an old Crackberry to play with and that's how I found the calculator.

Re: 2 Gigs

I average 3 gb a month, but i am on my phone or using my phone almost 6-8 hrs a day continuesly during the week. I probably average 4 hrs a day with pandora going along with a lot if other stuff going on sucking data.

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying " I'll try again tomorrow".

Re: 2 Gigs

I've used Pandora on my phone with some pretty crappy slow connections so even if you hit the 2 Gig limit and get throttled most likely Pandora will still be usable with the slower bandwidth.
