Smart Meters

OG&E is rolling out the smart grid here in OKC.. A delightful looking young man came to my gate today..

When I advised him I'd rather not participate, He was civil enough, Just said to expect someone from OG&E to come tell me how they're gonna put one in anyway...He might have been able to sense that I wasn't going to let him on my property...He might have seen the bulge in the back of my waistband... Who knows...

Aside from being able to tell every time you turn on/off a light, Appliance, etc, Which I'm just not comfortable with.. ( They'll be able to predict when no one will be home..) I'm just not ready for this level of my privacy being invaded..You know the government has their hands in the data stream...And will be using it for whatever it's worth...

Hacking technology to exploit the smart grid is already being shared out in the world..

So the question is...

How do you feel about this...

Re: Smart Meters

I'm sure if you ask nicely, they'll disconnect you from their electrical grid completely.

Re: Smart Meters

I saw a commentary a few days ago about this. (can't remember where) It is truly invasive to your privacy. The police will eventually be able to use it and supposedly won't need a warrant. As pissed off as everybody is right now I see a big law suit coming.

Re: Smart Meters

Yeah, I can't wait to see how many alarms my hot tub sets off...It's on a timer...12 on 12 off

I know that I'll eventually have to conform... But jamming technology does exist..

I have my first wind generator on the way... Two or three of those and some solar panels should get me close to "off the grid"....

Screw those bastards...

Re: Smart Meters

Big Brother just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

By the way, I've had my hot water heater on a separate circuit with a timer so it only heats during off-peak hours. I pay a lower rate for electricity this way, and have been for the past 25 years. I just got a notice from the electric company that along with rate increases, they're eliminating this program. Now I can heat my water 24/7. So much for energy conservation.

I don't like it either. It makes me feel like building a yurt, or a tepee and going Caveman! They can take their equipment and ram it up their snout. :-)

Re: Smart Meters

I'm with you, John. You can refuse entry to your property, denying their "smart meter," of course. BUT, they can also unhook their electrical line, claiming you are interfering with their grid updates, etc.

Your plan to generate your own power is a good one. You may well need it.

Re: Smart Meters

Bet it won't be long before someone comes up with a cloaking device.

I can go off grid but the cost of diesel fuel prevents me from staying off for any length of time.

Some other neat developments maturing that may make it economical to get off and stay off in the not too distant future.

Solar too expensive and inefficient for the moment. Not enough wind here to do anything with. A close neighbor has a creek that flows about 250gpm with a 60' drop in 200'. Now I can do something with that to benefit both of us.

Re: Smart Meters

Correct, Gunny. Until we have an economical and practical we to store power, for when the Sun is not shining and wind is not blowing, solar and wind will be nothing more than continuing pork projects.

Re: Smart Meters

Got the smart meter forced on me today... But, I got an actual OG&E employee to say to me, " Either a new meter or no power" ... That's something the lawyers can work with...

They played right into my hands...

Did you get that in writing?

Liars, I mean lawyers, really like things like that on paper, especially under company letter head.

Take a look here and see if this may help you. http://stopsmartmeters.org/
