A$$hole!

Looks like our friend cat or another asshole found us and thought we might be a good victim. For the last 10 minutes we were under DOS attack, and we are only back up, since I was just online as it happend. Thanks for the PM Tim, I would not have been online otherwise.

Anywho, I blocked the IP address (out of China this time) and we are back to our regular scheduled programming.

Oh, and I apologize for the interruption!

Probably he/she is using a open relay from somelse's server... In this casethe IP will be no good for counter attack. We will just be hitting the wrong guy...

Nah, there is no point in that. We've had them for years now, and every time he/she/they find a new IP to attack us from I'll just add them to the blocked IP addresses and be done with it.

I honestly don't know. Especially since by now they should know that there are better targets, 'cuz the moment I see 'em I get rid of 'em. What makes me wonder even more is that it is the SAME attack every time, so finding them takes only minutes. (If you know what to look for)

Sure, it's no secret. This particular attack we were under (for the third or 4th time) isactually quite easy to find. In unix there is a utility called 'netstat'. Netstat can show you all the open connections. With netstat you can see where the attck comes from and can then block the offending IP address in the firewall. Quite simple actually. As I said, when you know what to look for.

My sympathies.

I've had to go as far as blocking the entire IP range for APNIC and several South American countries - just to keep my servers functional.

Bit easier for me snce my sites don't (yet) have the international potential of this one. VERY local stuff.

Question

It amazing what motivates these losers to try to destroy someones website. The Colorado Beemers site was totally destroyed a few weeks ago and they had to completely rebuilt it. So many folks use these sites for their pleasure and hobbies. I just don't get what makes these scumballs tick. Luckely Andy was on the job!!

Saboteurs should be found, drawn and quartered. no 2nd chances. The people that damage other peoples computer systems cost others millions of dollars annually.

My guess is they are pencil necked geeks that could not beat their way out of a wet paper bag. An the damage they create is some sort of mental conquest.

I figure they are on par with child molesters and rapists.

The ironic thing is they see no wrong with their actions. So being disemboweld while alive seems only fitting.

Just my thoughts of course.

Unfortunately, Mike, many of these "saboteurs" wind up to be kids just having a good time seeing if they can screw up someone, with no idea of just how much grief they are causing, and even less concern.
