Why is it that DOT withholds permission to import BMW helmets?
http://www.bmw-motorrad.co.za/bikes/...ult.asp?Id=420
The tests in Europe are more stringent and overall tougher than DOT's.
I have two system helmets, an Aeroflow, and a sports. All fine pieces of engeneering. Is it hanky panky between manufacterers?

I think it's a control issue. If DOT allowed Euro-tested helmets in, they be agreeing that the Euro helmets tests are equal to or better than the US tests. That may well be true, but I doubt they want to admit it.

It's all moot of course, since few people (if any) ever get written up for a non-approved helmet. I've never had my helmet inspected when pulled over for a traffic stop. And since DOT passes certain "brain bucket" half helmets, then you really have to wonder just what the process is actually testing.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

This discussion came up at the BMW booth yesterday and the Great American Motorcycle Show. The answer is "Can you spell lawsuit!" The great American public is so in love with going to court to sue someone, i.e. McDonalds coffee spilled in someones lap and etc, BMW has decided not to put their helmets up for DOT or Snell testing. They don't want to be sued if someone dies with their helmet on. Straight from the dealers mouth. They've been trying to import the for years.

YMMV.

Too bad they don't have the same feeling toward the failing rear drive bearings.
