Iron Butt Ride

Yesterday, I received an email from Michael Kneebone, President of the Iron Butt Association. The SS1000 and BB1500 I rode on the way home from CCR in Rapid City has been approved!

Thanks to Mike (Sheldan 2) for putting the idea in my head and making me believe I might be able to pull it off! When we got to Cody, WY, Mike said, "We might just make a long-distance rider out of you yet." The way I felt after that 800 mile day, I didn't even want to think about riding anymore, much less home the next week. We spent the week riding around Yellowstone, then to CCR. Spending that much time on the bike, toughened up the "riding muscles". Leaving Rapid City early Sat. morning, I still didn't think I could do it, but decided to do my best. 1600+ miles and 35 hours, 15 minutes later, I was at my mom's house near Hickory, NC, having her sign the ending ride form.

You know, you get to buy the first round at the next CCR for everyone who comments on this thread now.....

Re: Iron Butt Ride

Good on ya! Don't go telling me you did THAT on a stock seat!

I did my SS1000 on an OEM seat, and was in sheer agony at 800 miles.

Congrats on your feat - got you home in time to finish your chores?

Congratulations, Lee! Am thinking of attempting the SS1K again this year. Failed first time. Tried to do it on 3 hours sleep.

You mean I get a free beer just for making a comment? Here is my comment!

Now how do you propose getting it to me?

That would be a long distance ride!

Congratulations!!!

I wanna do it too!!!

I have played with looking at possible one leg out and return for 1000 miles and discovered that one of the destinations that would work would be a trip to Alberta, province, Canada. Would you think the two border crossings would potentialy eat up too much time?

It should not..........
My wife and I rode from Chicago to Quebec then to Bar Harbor, Maine and back last August. We crossed at Port Huron and Hwy. 201 in Maine. Not more that 10-15 minutes at either crossing.

When I did mine, the halfway point was a highway rest stop in Oregon. Pulled in, rode the bike right over to a picnic table, and stretched out for a one hour nap.

Also, I did my ride on the 4th of July, for two reasons; 1. Day is very long, so lots of sunlight, 2. Actually VERY LITTLE traffic that day, because everyone is already at their destination if they're traveling for the holiday, PLUS no road construction that day.

Re: Iron Butt Ride

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! The email I got didn't detail any membership info. It said the membership was in processing, but set me up with a user name and password to get into the online store. I haven't looked around in there yet. Probably this weekend.

I didn't do the ride on a factory seat. When I bought the bike, there was a Corbin on it. It's low and puts a painful bend in my bad knee, so I ordered an AirRider and had it shipped to the hotel. Had I not done that, I'd never made it. Thanks Dave for letting me try yours out. It worked wonders.

Now why didn't I think of that! There was probably ONE around RC, SD a few months back.

That's a ride! How many miles and what time limit?

I sent the IBA an email through the contact us link a week ago Wed. Ira Agins replied in approx. 45 minutes that they were working on rides that had been submitted in Aug. and that mine should be coming up soon. Guess he was right.
