IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

As ususal, I get my best IT support from this forum! I'm trying to copy a homemade DVD of old family movies and it's not working. I have a DVD recorder/player in my PC and thought I had the software to simply make a copy of a DVD, but it's not working. I get all sorts of messages in jargin that are uncomprensable.....

Is there simple (user friendly) software that is recommended, for what should be a simple task? I've tried DVD Flick, and Nero and both give me error messages when it is time to make the copy. I know the DVD that I have is not copy protected, because I made it several years ago. My DVDs are DVD-R and there is enough space. Anything I'm leaving out? Any suggestions?

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

Dano,

A fairly recent Microsoft update has disabled CD roms and DVD writers on a lot of systems.

If you go to " MY Computer" does the DVD writer show as a drive? If not...here is a link to the support page from Microsoft.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

The fix is just a slight change to the registry.

Hope that Helps you!

Ron

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

One of the drives says: DVD-RW Drive (D)
There is another that says: CD-RW Drives (E)

Is this what you mean? By the way, I failed to mention that I can play DVD's and I think copy them to my hard drive. Trying then to copy them from the hard drive to the DVD gives me the error message.

I just went to the Microsoft "Fix It" site and they require me to use Explorer 7 or 8. I've got Firefox which is so much better. Hate to switch to maybe fix problem.

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

Dano,

If you can play a DVD the microsoft fix is not your problem.

Can you send us the actual error message that you get?

Ron

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

You may need an editing program. You may also try to download it on to your computer and then open up Windows movie maker and import into that and copy onto a dvd or cd. If that doesn't work, buy a Mac.

You will almost for sure need an editing/burning program. You may end up finding out that editing and burning your home videos can be a lot of fun.
I can suggest a few like these that work well with a PC:

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

I might also suggest that Sony makes a burner that converts video directly to DVD in a nice little package. It is so easy to use and works great! I burned all my old VHS to DVD this way. I have one that I am thinking about selling so hit me up if you are interested. Here is a link to the product:

Try DVD FAB to isolate it as a hardware/software issue (program is free for 30 days, then $60 for a 2-year license if you decide it's worth it).

This program seems to be able to copy most DVDs I throw at it.

I have had issue in the past where a DVD-RW written with an older burner could not be read by a newer burner. My solution was to temporarially install the old burner and make a disk image to burn with the new device.

Good luck!

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

Thanks Geno and all, I just tried to make a copy on my wife's laptop using Roxio and it seemed simple until it was time to put my blank DVD into the tray. Took the laptop 13 minutes to store a copy and then for some reason, the laptop is not able to copy on to my blank DVD-R. It keeps telling me to insert it after I have inserted it !!!!! There must be something on my original, which is a copy that is preventing the copy. I've wasted too much time on this.... I've tried other blanks.... Is it necessary to format a blank DVD? Maybe it's time to try Mac. Maybe go to a local store to see if it works in the showroom.. Guess the next step is to try FAB ? and Roxio seems so easy.

Are you sure your DVD writer handles DVD-R? There is a difference between + and - R DVD's. It may only work with DVD+R (the more common type to use) which would explain the problem

Oh and yes, my MAC works great at burning right out of the box.

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

I'm sorry - My DVD's say DVD+R.

The DVD that I'm trying to copy says DVD-R. Could that be the problem? I did not look closely enough!

My DVD drive is listed as DVD-RW. Should I just be using the -RW DVD?

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

If your drives are dvd-R then you should only use DVD-R or DVD-RW DVDs.
If your drives are DVD+R you can use either +or -
In any event you can Read the DVD-R DVDs.

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

How old are your DVD burners? If they are a few years old they probably can't recognize the newer, faster media. I've run into this problem before, you put the disk in and the program says to put in a disk because the burner can't read the newer media.
Oh, and the same goes for trying to use old slow blank media in a newer, faster burner.

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

My DVD/CD Recorder ( not into Burning yet!) is about 3-4 years old. That too might be the problem. I'm going to pick up what should be the correct DVD today and try that. What a PITA. Probably ruined 12 DVD's learning... Thanks for the advise. Hate to have to replace the DVD Recorder..

Re: IT Help Needed - Can't make a DVD Copy

Got my copies made!

I was able to locate a DVD+R copy of the video I wanted to duplicate and since I had several blank DVD+R's I tried my wife's Laptop and it worked. Guess that's because everything matched. Got my education on DVD's I know more about burning DVD's than before last week.... Next step is to get a new DVD burner for my computer that will handle all of the new formats. I put the old one in several years ago, so replacing it with a new one shouldn't be that hard!

Any recommendations for a good internal DVD burner?

Thanks for all of the help.
