Bike stolen

We just discovered that our new (2.5 months old) Goldwing was stolen from in front of the apartment building. I am SO miffed!

They must have specifically come for THAT bike and rolled it up on a trailer. I have both keys here.

Hey, Andy - truly sorry about this. What a hassle now!!

Google = stolen motorcycle data base or stolen motorcycle registry. Some good links there (although a lotta trash links too). Good luck. And maybe think about LoJack in the future - ideal for apartment residents.

Seems like an other inside job, similar to the break-in into my apartment... only about 10 miles away... This used to be the low crime part of Houston... no more.

How much longer till we see advertisements for barb wire fenced, gated, and protected by armed guards subdivisions and apartments?

Dude, that really sucks. Hopefully you didn't have a lot of personal stuff in the bike, and that you can replace it easily enough through insurance.

Not the best way to start twenty-ten, though.

Re: Bike stolen

No, it may not compare to losing yr GoldWing, but my two bicycles were stolen form my shed in early September. They were nice bicycles.

I hate the feelings of paranoia (was it a neighbor, or just a punk?), helplessness, (call police fill out a report), frustration (visit pawn shops, check local Craigslist) and just plain missing my STUFF I worked hard for...

Those feelings may diminish, but I think they will nver disappear.

Sorry for yr loss.

Re: Bike stolen

Sorry to hear about the GW, Andy. As one who has been through the experience, I can emphathize. A few years ago I had a Mercedes SL 600 stolen. It was never recovered. However, about 90 days later I started getting notices of overdue parking tickets. Who ever stole it was apparently driving it regularly and racking up parking tickets all over town. I then had to deal with not only the insult of my car being stolen but with attempting to get out of dozens of over due parking citations. Denver's finest at their best!

Sorry for your loss Andy. What a lousy way to start the new year.

Goldwings typically aren't high on the theft list, but apartment parking lots are like a candy store for motorcycle thieves.

Hope your insurance does right by you.

Re: Bike stolen

Damn! I'll bet GEICO sends that little lizard dude over to your place and he'll have it all squared up by tomorrow!

Sorry to hear this.

Maybe the yellow one would make a great replacement. I know if I were a thief I wouldn't steal a yellow Wing! Come to think of it, I wouldn't even test ride one either! Although, on the other hand, she'd be 800 lbs of conspicuity in the flesh!

Best of luck Andy. I hope this is resolved quickly.

Re: Bike stolen

UPDATE:

Geico came through and took care of us. The amount Geico offered and is paying for the bike is in essence the MSRP for the bike since it was SO new.

This means that in this case the insurance I have took good care of me. Now who has these F800GS and F650GS for a decent price again?

That's really great news. I had an experience with Geico 2 years ago that was very favorable as well. Not anywhere near the scale you were dealing with, so I was watching this one closely to see how it played out. Glad to hear it's all coming together.

Re: Bike stolen

We pretty much decided we would go for two new (smaller) bikes. Since Karen now rides her own and enjoys it, there is no need for the big bike. I have my eyes on a F800GS for me and an F650GS for Karen.

At least those bikes would be perfectly capable to do the Alaska trip we have in its initial planning stage (sometime in the next 3-5 years)

Andy

Glad to hear the insurance came through. I have discovered the feeling of being violated takes a while longer.

Just my .02 - why don't you and Karen both get the F800 GS? That way, on your Alaska trip, you only need to worry about critical spares for one type of bike.

Re: Bike stolen

Hey Andy, Stevie beat me to providing the Lone Star link but you might consider their used bikes. They have a 2007 F650GS with bags and only 5k on the clock. while it's a bit long in the tooth, they also have a 1998 R1100GS with bags with less than 51k on the clock. Good luck in your search.

Re: Bike stolen

Glad to hear the Lizzard People came thru for you..
My house was robbed way back in 1981. I still don't think I'm over that paranoia.
Everything stays locked and locked up. Bikes all live inside the shop and never get left outside.

Good luck keeping the small ones there. Time for alarms and chains. And gunplay....

I like gunplay.....

Just my .02 - why don't you and Karen both get the F800 GS? That way, on your Alaska trip, you only need to worry about critical spares for one type of bike.
I though about that too, BUT she is a bit too short for the 800GS, and the 650GS fits her size much better.

Even if you get the low-seat option on the F800GS?

Also, you might check out Sargent cycle.

http://www.sargentcycle.com/bmwwsf800.htm

According to Ruth, the best seat she has ever had was the Sargent that was on the K1200RS.

I know after one ride on her new (my old) K1200GT, she's gonna be begging for a new seat.
