It is not good when you the engine has stopped and you look up and see the tank car and the rest of the train still coming.

Ride 'em if you got 'em.

Re: Train running thru a tornado

It looks like dragging a few cars behind you in the dirt is a far better braking system than releasing the air brakes on the back half of the train.

Re: Train running thru a tornado

There in is the problem. When the air hose between cars that controls the train brake broke apart, all the brakes on all the cars should have gone into full lock. That's what happened to the engine with the air hose broke loose on the cars that were tipped over. Looks like someone forgot to open the angle cocks to air brake line some where. Two thoughts -

Why not to pull up too close to that train crossing when the arms are down.

and

OK - who's gonna clean up MY YARD???

Re: Train running thru a tornado

I think the brakes on that train were working just fine. It takes a mile to stop a train going that fast and the engine was draging cars through the dirt so it stopped faster than the rest of the train.

What a ride that must have been.

Train Brake - Air Brakes
Trains have an electronic box that rides on rear car draw head with connection to brake line, this box sends signals to a set of indicators on lead locomotive, signals are brake pipe pressure, when movement occurs, which direction movement is, you would not want to start a forward movement if the rear part of the train is moving in the opposit direction, this opposit movement happens when brakes are released, the train is on a slope and the slack runs out when train brakes are released.
If angle cock was not opened on brake pipe the engineer would know. Once the train brakes goes into emergency all the engineer can do to keep the rear part of the train from running into the front part is to bail off the locomotive brakes so the front part does not stop quicker than the rear part. Train brakes are applied from front car to rear car like knocking over a row of dominos.

Re: Train running thru a tornado

I've seen wrecks like that with my Lionel train set as a kid. It was always a much easier mess to clean up. And, what was in the tank car that's now spilling all over the right of way?
