Rode In Two Escorted Toy Rides

I rode in my first ever toy rides this past weekend ( pictures are in the south east section ) I have heard about them but had never done any.

I left after work friday headed to Decatur AL. I got to Atlanta about 7:30 pm hit the HOV lane & rode 70 to 80 mph all the way thru. Thats a first for me in that town. The temps kept dropping & just north of Birmingham AL. it started snowing. It wasn't sticking to the roads but the bridges were wet. After an hour it quit I thought kool end of snow.

I woke up at 5:30 am at the Super 8 motel at I-65 & hwy 67 looked out & saw about 1" of snow. I met Guy Shipp at his place ( trucker warehouse ) at 8:30 and we left at 9:15 towards the place to meet up with the Police escort.

We headed due west to get away from the snow & ice as soon as possible. I figured if a guy I just met from Al. was willing to ride in this stuff me too. The first several bridges we crossed had ice on them but they were short & straight I just pulled in the clutch in & coasted across.

Several of the other bridges had sand on them. We then went across a few more bridges that had no ice or water on them & there hadn't been any snow on the ground for a while. I made the mistake of thinking everything was behind us. Going up one bridge over railroad tracks Guy slowed down he on the left me on the right I'm getting it in third gear & crest the bridge solid ice at the top and all the way down I wasn't even going straight & was drifting to the right all I could do was coast to keep from going down. I was almost at the guard rail when the ice ended.

We met at the waiting place for the escorted ride to the Eldridge Childrens Home and every thing else went perfect.

The only scare I had on the ride home was when I got off I-85 just before the SC state line. At the top of the off ramp was a car was barely moving. I followed him into the Shell station where there were two other cars with flat tires. He made it three.

There were a few other ice spots on the road near home but they were far enough apart to avoid.

On Sunday I washed my bike at daylight redecorated it and was ready to ride by 10:00 am. It was close to home and was like a walk in the park.

I now have a whole year to improve my decorating skills.
