Christmas Vacation Advice Needed

Looks like the son and I will be going to DC for a few days after Christmas. Anybody been there recently that would like to recommend a hotel, restaurants, etc? We definitely want to see Arlington, Air and Space Museum, and the monuments of course. Is the trolley tour worth the fiddy bones? What else is a must see?

We usually stay at the Holiday Inn in Rosslyn, Virginia. Near Arlington Cemetery. Can walk to the Metro station 1 block away and get to the mall/museums easily. You can also hike over the Key Bridge and be in Georgetown where you will find many good restaurants. We like taking those tours in any new city-it helps to get a feel for what you may like to spend more time doing.

Re: Christmas Vacation Advice Needed

We'll be there for 4 or 5 days, I'm hearing the week long Metro pass is well worth the cost if we stay out in Arlington. Park the car and ride the train everywhere.

Re: Christmas Vacation Advice Needed

There are two Smithsonian Air and Space Museum locations: the original one on the mall and the much newer, larger Annex near Dulles Airport. If you like planes and stuff, don't miss the annex.
They actually have the first Space Shuttle that was used for landing practice and the Enola Gay B-29 amongst many others.
I think that a trolly tour will also let you ride between monuments. It can be a hike between them otherwise.

I've only seen it a few times, and it was all on the ground by the time I got there. Down side (?) of living in Florida your whole life.

We stay in College Park, MD. when we do the IMS show in January. it's not that big of deal driving in and out of DC as long as it's not during one of the rush hours. The Metro is a big hit with many however just remember conservatives sit on the right liberals on the left!
Enjoy, you pretty much can't go wrong visiting anything!

Re: Christmas Vacation Advice Needed

I'm not too big on memorials and all, or parades for that matter, but that Korean war memorial in the snow is a sight to see, the figures are amazingly well done, its spooky.

My dad served in Korea during the war (or conflict if you will). so I may be a little prejudiced.

Get ready to walk, a lot!!! take the metro everywhere between walks/momument visits, its easy and worth it.

When working there on 9-10 and 9-11 (ya, that one), my motorcycle was parked at tysons corner (motel) and the metro station was just a few blocks away from the motel, way easier than driving or trying to park.

I took my east german family/friends (exchange program, I had their kid for a year) to watch the ceremony at the tomb and all over D.C, they were very interested in US history. My friend was a soldier in the east german army and has some pretty incredible stories.

I think the motels in Arlington are a bit closer to the metro but it's been awhile. From Tysons corner you do have to drive a mile or two to the metro station.

I could spend a week at the Smithsonian alone.

I'm not a city guy but its a pretty interesting place, you'll have a blast if'in you can get around in all that snow!

Re: Christmas Vacation Advice Needed

We're staying in Crystal City, about a block from the Metro station. I'm wondering if any of this snow will still be there by next weekend; temps up in the 40's this week.

When I checked the airport delays yesterday the FAA site said less than 15 minutes. I guess if all of the incoming flights are cancelled there wouldn't be any delay at all!

Re: Christmas Vacation Advice Needed

I work in Crystal City, right across the street from the Pentagon and the Pentagon City Mall. It looks like I will be riding public transportation for a couple of days this week. My neighborhood is the worst. Approximately 20-inches of snow. It will still be around next weekend. They are calling for a mix of rain and snow on Christmas eve, and Christmas day.
Enjoy your visit!

The last two times we were in DC we stayed in Crystal City - nice area.

The Pentagon City Mall is huge, if you like to shop - not many places to eat however, IMHO. There are several places to eat around 23rd street as well as in and around the Crystal City shops along Crystal Dr.

One place we saw the last time we went was the Holocaust museum - probably not a jolly "Christmas Time" event, however very sobering and definitely worth a visit if you're inclined.

I second the visit to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles airport (annex of the air and space museum). Full size displays, a lot of planes, a lot of history and the walkways are set up so you have several "levels" of displays from the ground floor all the way to the top of the hangar - very impressive! Entry is free, however you pay to park...
