Question Virus or Trojan Question - Ghost Voices from PC

The last 4 nights I was in Arizona visiting my son and his wife. My wife and I slept in the guest bedroom. They keep their main PC (Windows XP) computer in this room and it is on all the time. After a few minutes of non-use, it goes into standby mode until it detects new keystroke activity. When you hit the space bar, it pops up with a log-in screen where you select the user (him or her) and log back on to XP.

However, on at least two nights, I was awakened at precisely 3:00 AM by voices coming from the PC speakers. A man and woman speaking in English. Neither time could I get awake enough fast enough to comprehend what was being said. It goes on for almost a minute. From a PC that is supposedly in standby. Neither my son nor his wife ever hear it since they don't sleep in that room.

My interpretation is that a virus or trojan has infected their PC. Does this behavior ring any bells with anyone? Weirdness!

How can you tell a Southern Shost from a Northern Ghost?
One says "Boo Ya'll" :-)

Good idea I'll ask son to try it. We're home now.

In another life I lived near people that liked to use their CB and shortwave radio at all hours of the night - darn signal was so strong it modulated into my clock radio, and PC speakers, and I could hear most of their conversation (one sided).

If the speakers are "cheap enough" and the transmitter "strong enough" you may just have some modulation from THAT... have them look around the neighborhood for a large tower on some one's house (possibly cranked down during the day, still hard to miss).

If it happens at the same time every night, you might suspect some automated message from a commercial tower somewhere?

Unplug the speakers from the computer output and if it still happens it's an RF problem. I had similar issues with one of my neighbors and his illegally amplified CB. It bled into my TVs, stereo, and even my alarm clock (non-radio type). The FCC would not help. I solved it by taping the transmit button down on a CB and leaving it set inside my truck with the door open and the keys in the ignition (ding-dong, ding-dong, etc. etc.). I just did that for ten minutes every time there was a problem and soon the problem went away.

Prolly not related, butt our Dish Network receiver box does a 'push' at precisely 0300 - dang thang fires up a fan of some sort while it's 'pushing' and then, after one minute, fan goes off and the dang thang quiets down and an internal light shuts off. Took the dogs several nights to realize a burglar was not in the casa!!!

Maybe the anti-virus scan runs at that time. Might have a voice announcement that it is starting.

Several after market screen savers have sound associated with the "sleep" phase... It's easy enuf to just mute the speakers.
