Deer strike in southern Ohio.

My brother in-law, hit a deer last Saturday in Zanesville Ohio. Mark and his wife were riding their BMWs, on a weekend get away. He saw the deer near the side of the road on 555 and covered his breaks when Bambi jumped right out in front of his bike. He broke a rib or two, cracked a vertebrae, punctured his lung. He was able to get up and take a picture of the bike before help got there. They life flighted him to Grant trauma center in Columbus. We had just got back from a ride to Columbus and back when we got the news. We went down to see him Sunday. He was in good spirits and looked a lot better than his gear. Progressive is going to fix his GT and its on its way to the BWM dealer in Cleveland. He was hoping to get out Thursday but a small portion of his lung isn't healing as fast as they wanted. So we're heading down again this morning to visit. Last we heard is he will get out some time this weekend.

As Steve said, its good to hear that your bother will recover. Deer are just a pain - especially in the fall.

Re: Deer strike in southern Ohio.

Mike, that is a sober reminder to all of us to watch out for those varmints.

I'm glad to hear he is on the mend. It could have been worse.

I had to stop for a deer tonight on the way home from work. He had been hit, was injured but was still alive... laying down but sitting up (think "Nativity scene") in the middle of the road. A deputy sheriff was there to put the critter out of its misery.

Prayers for your brother-in-law for continued speedy healing.

We send him our best! That is a great stretch of road, but the deer population is quite numerous and very active this time of year.

Re: Deer strike in southern Ohio.

Update, we went to visit Mark yesterday and got some news he leaked some air, and had to put him on vacuum again, but later they tried taking his chest tube out since there was no more blood drain and put him on 100% O2. If that worked they would get ahead in the game. It worked today he is being released. Yea.

Mike:

Tis the season I guess. Glad he lived to tell about it and would be nice to see pics of his gear.

I don't want to hijack the thread and hope this is not considered hijacking, but is there any merit to the Hornet electric deer avoidance gadgets? Looks like the U.S. Forestry Service and Red Cross buys them by the truckload.

Re: Deer strike in southern Ohio.

OH555 is one technical, tough road...I'd be shy to try and ride it this time of year...hell, I have enough trouble with it in the middle of summer.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery to your brother.

+1 on the Triple Nickle. It is a very technical ride and gravel on some corners as well.Led a club ride on the 4th of July weekend in '08. Howard joined us. At the end and the Mighty Ohio most of us decided to do it Northbound. Great road in the SUMMER!

Michael, glad your bro-in-law is doing well.

Re: Deer strike in southern Ohio.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers!

I'm healing up fast, but it still hurts when I sneeze ( well, don't do that!), and
600mg of "I-be-broken" every 6 hours help.

The gear preformed as advertized. Olympia Airglide pants and jacket that saved me from a lot more damage that a 30MPH field rodent hit could have delivered!
The photo's of the gear did not come out as I would have liked, as it wasn't all that torn up, I was tumbling instead of sliding.

Progessive is the best, they had a check at Sills that week to fix the GT, and the next week cut me a check for my pants, jacket, helmet, and boots!

All the gear has been replaced, and I did get my RF-1100 yesterday.
I put the hemet on and ran around the house to see if it will be less noisey than the RF-1000, which it seems to be true . I think on a bike would be a better test, but hey, it was the best I could do at the moment!

Again thanks much!

Re: Deer strike in southern Ohio.

Good Stuff Mark!
Glad you are healing and the company up the street came to the rescue as well.

Too bad you didn't post a video of your early new helmet trials.

Seriously, a deer strike is one of my greatest fears. They seems to be grazing at road's edge locally and are not even aware of traffic. When they dart out of the woods, I get a pucker at the end of my digestive track.

Glad you are feeling better,

Re: Deer strike in southern Ohio.

+1 for Progressive. They did well my me when the LT sunk in 2 feet of gravel. Examined the bike, clothing, and helmets with a microscope until they found a reason to replace them. Did not blink when the BWM dealer found more under a cover.
