Please define: "Tech Sessions"

I've seen them mentioned here but don't know what they are. What is a tech session? How frequently are they held? Where are they? Informal? formal? Fee-based? Is there a secret LT handshake I have to learn to attend one?

Please provide details.

Thanks!

Tech Session = short for Technical Session = A session where a group of owners of motorcycles (or cars etc.) get together to perform maintnance, modifications, adding farkles/gadgets to their respective vehicles or to assist another one.

Tech Sessions are usually held at the residence of one of the members of said group. They are not fee-based. A small donation to cover raiding the host's parts bin is acceptable but not mandatory.

They are informal and usually include some type of food break (hosted or brought in by attendees).

They are held as needed by several of the attendees and scheduled to accommodate most.

No secret handshake, but knowing the secret LT wave is a bonus.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Raffy.

So.... can anyone host one? Last Fall I had a TDI "GTG" (Get ToGether) at my house -- same concept as a tech session. 25 guys brought their VW TDI-based cars (TDI is VW's diesel engine) to do oil changes, suspension mods, chip reprogramming, tell tall tales, spin lies, etc., etc.

I have a 30x40 detached garage with 4 overhead doors, lighting, power, water, concrete floor, 20x52 concrete pad (10x40 under cover), all the gravel parking you could possibly want (or want to stay away from).

How does one attend a tech session -- invite yourself? Show up?

Is there a secret LT wave? If so, I need to learn it.

Dang! Nice setup for a tech session.

Just post up in your appropriate forum for your area (Ohio) that you want to hold/host a tech session and people will respond and attend.

Pick a date with enough advance notice so you have more attendees.

Let everyone know what tools you have and what tools might be needed.

Ask what the attendees would like to accomplish as far as servicing their bikes adding stuff etc.

Just check out the tech sessions in other forums for reference.

With a setup like that, I might just swing by to get some work done.

Actually, I think there are a few people who need to do HID upgrades, etc. out your way. Might be a bit tough riding there in the snow, but I hear you oHIo types are tough.

Seriously, it sounds like a great place to hold something once the weather cooperates a bit better.

Agree with you there, although we haven't had any snow here in central Ohio for some time -- one of the mildest winters I can recall.

The building is not heated, so a nice Spring day would be good. I'll keep the invitation open, so if others read this and want to set one up at my place in a few weeks they will be welcome to. (or what the heck -- if some fellow LT owners want to work on stuff any time we could do it)

I'd like to install a HID upgrade, Jpegs, intercom. . . . .

Cool

Howard I went to Streets and trips to see how far it is to your place. It is only 960 miles, could get in an IBA ride and a tech session in one trip. Sounds like a great place for a tech session.

Actually I'd had the same thought, but at 2,500 miles / 42 hours that's a bit tougher for me to plan.

You can get the extra 40 (or much more) miles on some great twisty roads in SE Ohio, on the way here and around the area.

Let's keep this conversation going; a tech session is a natural here, IMO. I've done it before with VWs, as mentioned previousy. I'll attach a couple of photos after I shrink them.

Joe, leave your saw at home. I do firewood as a side business; I have saws and anything else needed in that arena, but more importantly I have tons (literally) of firewood stacked and ready to go, and a 10' diameter burn ring.

OK Doug, I'll have to take your word for it.

I spoke with Joe on the phone earlier today; my first time talking with him. Seems like a nice enough guy, but your comment has me curious... concerned... confused. How does Joe use a chain saw?

OK, a tech session REALLY is a time and place where you can go and play dumb (in my case just acting natural like) and get your motorcycle worked on for free by really knowledgable folks who like doing that sort of thing.

I do. Well...checked anywho. I was going to run down to Tom Gallo's place as soon as the weather breaks up here, but I could just do this at Happy Howard's Buckeye-Based LT Tech Session & Dining Extravaganza!

I have a feeling when I'm done...it mighta been cheaper just to let my dealer do it! But then again, I'd rather spend it on you guys than the dealer anyway.

In eastern Fairfield County, SE of Columbus. It's approx. 50 minutes driving time (OK, 25 minutes for some of you guys) from downtown Columbus. ENE of Lancaster about 15 minutes. I actually live out in the country, north of Rushville. "Gun Barrel Road" pretty much says it all. The sheriff deputies don't even mind if we ride ATVs on the township roads. Mine is even street-legal.

No menu available, but here are 3 photos of the food tables. (I had to crop them to get them under the 1MB file size limitation on this site; there really was quite a spread at this event.)

Edited: don't know why I can't get the pictures to show. It says "Done" after they are uploaded; nothing shows, however.
