Thumbs up The Greatest Birthday Present!! (50th)

As much as I love open air traveling, I've always wanted to fly in an open cockpit plane, preferably with a radial engine. My wonderful wife hooked me up with a 40 minute flight in a 1941 Steerman Navy Trainer!! Unbelievable! This was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had. Even got to take the controls for a while. The smell of the exhaust, the feel of the radial throughout the plane, and the direct connection through the controls is just incredible! What a trip back in time. I couldn't stop thinking about the guys that used to fly such vehicles in combat situations. Man, I've got to tell ya' , if you like motorcycling....

Happy B-D, Dude! Sounds like a great time.

Happy Birthday!!!!!! What a great present!

Quite a few years ago, a guy in a similar airplane, I think mine was a 1949, used to travel around the skydiving drop zones and would take us up for a short ride, roll the airplane over and then let us drop from the seat. I really like jumping ( actually falling out) of the airplane, but the ride was something else! Great gift from your wife......

Congrats, what a blast!

Never got the chance to fall out the back seat upside down in one of those, always wanted to when I was jumping but..

I did get to jump an Antonov II for a year or so out in MD when jumping there in the early dayz. 12 cyl radial bi-plane, that thing was a riot to bail out of.

I not much into flying at all, only did it so I could get the hell out...at altitude that is

Someone at the DZ had an unbelieveable Steerman, used to luv watching that thing take off...

Re: The Greatest Birthday Present!! (50th)

My Uncle lived in Maryland and was a Flight Instructor until losing his medical. He knew lots of folks as he was proud of his "Airport Bum" moniker...

I visited him as part of my "Ride-to-The Wall" and "Rolling Thunder".... he said.. "I don't know why you ride those fool motorcycles... Let's go to the airport..."

When we arrived, it was as if he had it planned... there was a totally restored Navy Steerman Trainer.. the owner was shooting "touch-n-go" as he was getting to know the particulars of his airplane and after a little discussion with my Uncle, agreed to take us for a ride..

Yeah.. if I could afford to fly, it would give yet another place to "ride" ..hahaha

It was an awesome ride. Even though both of my brothers have their pilots licenses, I've never been that interested. BUT, I've always been intrigued by the open cockpit idea. THIS is a completely different experience! Love it and would go again anytime!
