I'm looking for a return item opinion

Several weeks ago I decided to order a CB Radio for the bike. The order was received on time, but the portable antenna would not fit correctly on the radio. The company will not take calls and I was forced to return it for a refund. I was forced to pay shipping both ways and they are also charging me a restocking fee.

I paid with a credit card and can probably dispute the claim simply for the principal. What really set me off was a final email from the company, explaining their policy and then telling me to have a nice day.

Before I publicly trash the company, am I out of line to expect a complete refund?

Re: I'm looking for a return item opinion

I have a problem with companies who make their money on marked-up shipping charges and restocking fees.

From what you have described, seems part of their "policy" is screw the customer who is foolish enough to order from us (I'm not calling you foolish), so I'd probably begin my trashing now. And, from what you have described you'll probably be stuck for the shipping, since I'm sure it's buried somewhere just noticeable enough to place you on notice.

Re: I'm looking for a return item opinion

If the portable antenna was packaged with the CB radio and it does not fit, I would say you have every right to expect a full refund of all of your costs.

If you purchased the antenna elsewhere, or even from the same store that sold you the CB, I would say they are within their rights to expect you to pay return shipping. ( unless they told you it would indeed fit that radio) If they have their return poilcy posted on their website & it mentions a return policy, I would say that would apply as well.

However, if they do not have a return policy posted, I don't see how they can force you to pay it.

I run an e-commerce site & we deal with returns all the time. We post all of our policies, including return fees etc. , but bottom line is if there is a problem that is our fault, we fix it on our dime. We try to treat people the way we would want to be treated ourselves.

Danno,

Send them a bill for Handling and Shipping Charges that amounts to about 50% over what you paid for it both ways, THEN call the credit card company and contest the bill. No way you should have to pay for the mistake.

Re: I'm looking for a return item opinion

Thanks everyone - Sort of what I thought. The company is:

http://www.antonline.com/

and the antenna for the portable was packaged with the radio. The money is not a big deal, but the way they are responding is annoying. $8.00 shipping and then I had to return it for another $8.00 and then another % for "restocking" a defective product!

My last order to Antonline!

If antenna was part of the product and was defective, I say go after them. Would be very surprised if you didn't get your money back from your CC company. Since this store is a CNet "Certified merchant", I would be sure to go to CNet & rate them. If you also have a twitter account, you might want to relay your experience there.

Re: I'm looking for a return item opinion

Credit just showed up for the radio, no restocking fee, but not reimbursed for shipping. Since I'm not one to fight over mole hills, it's over. $16.00 shipping (total for both ways) for a $78.68 radio that would not work is the lesson!

Guess http://www.antonline.com/

just doesn't care about having me as a return customer! They have a phone number listed for "customer care" that is not answered.

Dan, I still would file a complaint with my credit card company... just because it will cost the vendor an additional $20.00 minimum from their processor. What can I say? I am evil!

Re: I'm looking for a return item opinion

Just out of curiosity I started looking at Ant Online's FAQ's.

Maybe I'm reading between the lines too much - but I detect a little attitude problem here:

Q: This is my last resort - I have tried every number I can think of and nothing seems to work. I must have lost my order number. Can anyone manually search through the millions of order Antonline receives looking for my order? I understand this may not be possible.

A: We can try, but this is a long shot and we won't get back to you if we can't find it.
Use this link and enter all the info you can about your order. We will try to find it manually, and get back to you in a few days if we find any info. We have the same order look-up tools we have provided to you, so if you can't find your own order, we might not be able to either..

My translation of the answer:

We might make an effort to help you out, but since it is going to take soooo much time (and since we're so incredibly busy with other customers in the middle of a nasty recession) we won't really make much of an effort. We'll leave you hanging if we decide we don't want to mess with it. Since you're such a dumb customer to begin with, why should we waste our time and resources trying to make sure you walk away happy - and perhaps buy something from us again in the future?

Have a nice day!

Somehow, get the feeling they won't be around long. Unless they come across with a change of attitude before word really gets around. Internet reaches a lot of people and very few will tolerate this sort of behavior. I don't

Hope you're right, Gunny. Pisses me off to see people treated this way by online stores. Makes us all look like jerks.

Re: I'm looking for a return item opinion

Thanks for the links Scott - Looks like I have esteem company! Guess I'll push my complaint a little more this afternoon with my credit card company and start to ruffle a few feathers. For now, it's off to the fish tank.

Hopefully no one else will be taken by this company.

So this "business" (using the term loosely) is actually trying to tell their customers that they have no more internal resources to find an order, than a customer?! I would not do business with these clowns based on this one stupid answer, alone.

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." (Some really OLD friggin' White dude who couldn't have possibly known what he was talking about!) WARNING: Official HATE speech!

FOLLOW-UP: Re: I'm looking for a return item opinion

Thanks for all of the advise. I took the time to fill out a "dispute claim" with my credit card company and they refunded the initial shipping charge from the company. I am still out my return postage, but that's the way it is!

I always use a credit card for the above reason as opposed to a debit card. I won't use a debit card.
