Gift Cards for Christmas

I just got this in an email from a friend and thought I would pass it on:

I wanted to give everyone a heads up that if you tend to give gift cards
around the holidays, you need to be careful that the cards will be
honored after the holidays. Stores that are planning to close after
Christmas are still selling the cards through the holidays even though
the cards will be worthless January 1. There is no law preventing them
from doing this. On the contrary, it is referred to as 'Bankruptcy
Planning). Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be
cautious about.

Circuit City (filed Chapter 11)
Ann Taylor- 117 stores nationwide closing
Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug ,and Catherine's to close 150 stores nationwide
Eddie Bauer to close stores 27 stores and more after January
Cache will close all stores
Talbots closing down specialty stores
J. Jill closing all stores (owned by Talbots)
Pacific Sunwear (also owned by Talbots)
GAP closing 85 stores
Footlocker closing 140 sto res mo re to close after January
Wickes Furniture closing down
Levitz closing down remaining stores
Bombay closing remaining stores
Zales closing down 82 stores and 105 after January
Whitehall closing all stores
Piercing Pagoda closing all stores
Disney closing 98 stores and will close more after January.
Home Depot closing 15 stores 1 in NJ ( New Brunswick )
Macys to close 9 stores after January
Linens and Things closing all stores
Movie Galley Closing all stores
Pep Boys Closing 33 stores
Sprint/Nextel closing 133 stores
JC Penney closing a number of stores after January
Ethan Allen closing down 12 stores.

Re: Gift Cards for Christmas

Thanks for the heads up.

There are always strings attached to the gift cards, some even lose value.

I used to be a big fan of store cards, but now they don't get any of our business.

We started buying Restaurant cards as most of them never go out of date and there are few, if any, stipulations!

Re: Gift Cards for Christmas

When you start out with "I just got this in an email from a friend" then I'm already suspicious. Has anyone done any actual research on this?

You could go with a Visa gift card, which will be useable almost anywhere. Unless Visa itself goes under, but how likely is that? On second thought . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Re: Gift Cards for Christmas

Oh hell Ken you would be suspicious if George W. Bush himself told you about this, who are you kidding?

I know that at least a third of these have been in the news of late. Linens & Things, Circuit City, Lane Bryant, Wilson Leather and Sharper Image to name some. I did not run each company to see if it was in fact true, but if you shop there, ask before you buy a gift card or buy an in store warranty.

Re: Gift Cards for Christmas

No, I believe that many companies are cutting retail locations, and that some are shutting down completely. It's the 'Bankruptcy Planning' aspect I'm questioning.

And I'd be willing to give a fair listen to whatever W says . . . if he could actually complete a full sentence, that is.

VISA is B of A, so not very likely to go under... quite contrary!

Re: Gift Cards for Christmas

Bankruptcy planning......hmmm

sure sounds an awful lot like writing checks
when you know you don't have any money to cover them.
and are planning to close your account before they're cashed.

I don't know to much about the whole bankruptcy thing
but I "heard" something about "them"
being responsible for things going back 6 months to a year?

can they really "get away with that?
