Aetna vs Blue Cross Blue Shield???

Wife needs to make a decision by Friday on her benefits. We have had Aetna for several years and it has been pretty good for us, but her company is offering BCBS now and she wants to know if we should switch. What say the lot of you? Anyone know both or compared both?

Well Jerry, I had Kaiser for 15 years. Over the last several years, they seriously jacked their rates. For what do they deserve this increase? For dramatically increased wait times due to "ghettoizing" their clinics with medicaid patients? I don't think so! So I switched to Blue Shield. In addition to saving over $200 per month, for the first time ever, I actually have my own doctor! And, if I have a ghetto relapse, I can still go to the "clinic!"

So yeah, nothing but good things to say about Blue Shield.

Aetna were VERY good when I was located in Philadelphia. They were only average in California. The difference...I was on a PPO in California and the people running that section of the business were very literal and more difficult than the original group.

Jerry,

Since we are in the same area. It seems that every doctor and every hospital around here accepts and actually prefers Blue Cross. Emily dealt with a number of specialists and some minor surgery last year, no problems at all. Still a lot of expenses after copays and limits, but all by the book. The first few month I was back here we still had United Healthcare and it was a mess.

We had BCBS in 2000 when we had our wreak. Every hospital and Dr. we had see all said BCBS, no problem. We never had to fight with them or have any problems. I wish we still had it.

My company made the switch from Aetna to BCBS about five years ago. In my opinion, it has been an improvement. Better network of physicians, more reliable billing, better coverage.

Wife & I have BCBS & have for over 15 years with great service. She also does medical transcription for a living & hears the tales of woe from the patients side as well as those from the doctors & the clinics side, as to billing, claim payment & paperwork. Her idea was to ask your regular doctor which they prefer to deal with. In Washington state, some Doctors will not take patients with certain health plans. They simply say they are not accepting patients at this time.

My wife and I have BCBS (Health Select) through her work. The only minor complaint that I have is that it is necessary to go through your primary care physician for a referral to see a specialist.

I've just moved here in CA and been doing research for a good health care provider, and found BCBS. I think your post are a great help.

Re: Aetna vs Blue Cross Blue Shield???

You have to compare the details of each policy. Does each plan offer direct access, out of network options etc.
Specialest care with Aetna can be subject to establishing medical necessity . BCBS usually has a hard cap = limit of services allowed by the specialest.
