Elf King

I was listening to the G. Gordon Liddy show on Wednesday morning after the election. They were talking about all the promises Obama made and whether he would be able to keep them. People flocked after him believing his words, are they going to be deceived like the boy in this old German poem?
I thought the words to the poem were interesting, as well as fitting to our political situation. The child who is sick & dying believes that if he follows the Elf Kind he will be saved. I wanted the share the poem with all of you. Here is the translated version.

Who rides, so late, through night and wind?
It is the father with his child.
He holds the boy in the crook of his arm
He holds him safe, he keeps him warm.

"My son, why do you hide your face so anxiously?"
"Father, do you not see the Elf king?
The Elf king with crown and cloak?"
"My son, it's a wisp of fog."

"You lovely child, come, go with me!
Many a beautiful game I'll play with you;
Some colorful flowers are on the shore,
My mother has some golden robes."

"My father, my father, can't you hear,
What the Elf king quietly promised me?"
"Be calm, stay calm, my child;
The wind rustles through dry leaves."

"Do you want to come with me, fine lad?
My daughters should be waiting for you;
My daughters lead the nightly dances
And will rock and dance and sing you to sleep."

"My father, my father, can't you see there,
The Elf lking's daughters in the gloomy place?"
"My son, my son, I see it well:
The old willows seem so gray."

"I love you, your beautiful form entices me;
And if you're not willing, I shall use force."
"My father, my father, he's grabbing me now!
The Elf king has wounded me!"

The father shudders; he rides swiftly,
He holds in his arms the moaning child.
Barely he arrives at the yard in urgency;
In his arms, the child was dead.

Poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
translated: Der Erlkönig

The lesson here is not to believe all that is promised to you.

Agreed, although I'll simply point out that applies to every election . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Re: Elf King

While my grama was holding my hand and dying, she asked me (being a church goer and all most of her life) if I thought there was really a god (knowing I'm not of those beliefs).

I had to think pretty hard to answer cause I'm not much of a lier.

So, I lyed, sort of. I told her something might be out there, I don't know for sure (thats sort of a half lie I guess, i really don't know anymore than the next guy whether I believe it or not)...that it was quite possible, that she was going to a better place.

and I told tell her no matter what, I'd be there the whole way before and after and that I would watch over her so no worries, just relax, we're in this together.

Sometimes, when someone needs something and their going down that one-way street, you do whats best for them, not for you.

comparing that story to this election however, i don't see the point. we got lots of promises in the last 8 yrs too, realistically, things could have gone either way. You don't know what you don't know.

Guess you need to read it a couple more times then and let it sink in. It wasn't the father lying to the boy, it was the boy believing what wasn't there. Don't believe everything you are promised. Nothing more nothing less, that is the point, so the comparison is VERY easy.
