Posting with embedded images

Since this topic has come up so frequently, I thought we should give a step by step guide. I will also post this as a sticky in the ‘Contact the Help Team forum.

How to put an image within your post.

I created these instructions on a machine running Windows XP. Some of the windows will be slightly different if you are running Vista or Mac OS.

First you need to create your post. Type in the subject and any text you want in the post.

It will look like this.

If you want to add the image as an attachment (the easiest way to do it) simply scroll down to manage attachments.

Click on ‘Manage Attachments’ and you will get a popup allowing you to browse for files on your computer to upload.

Click on ‘Browse’ and you will get a file explorer popup.

Select the file you want to upload and select ‘Open’ and you will go back to the ‘Manage Attachments’ window. The file you selected will be in the ‘File to Upload’ window next to the Browse button you selected. You can repeat this process for up to ten images.

Note: These should be image files no larger than 800 pixels in either direction. If they are larger the board will resize them to those maximums. Attachments can be larger than 800X800 but if you want them to be displayed within a post, the 800X800 maximum is imposed. The image will always look better if you resize it rather than having the system do it for you. Also keep in mind that there are limits in the image size in kb. A good rule of thumb is to keep the image to less than 200kb for inline posting. No image I used in this post was larger than 125kb and most are under 100kb.

Click on ‘Upload’ and the image will show up at the bottom under ‘Current Attachments’. Click on ‘Close this window’.

Now the file will be shown just above the ‘Manage Attachments’ button.

Now click on the filename and it will open in a new browser window. Highlight the entire URL in your browser address bar and copy it.

Paste it into the body of your post and surround it with image tags. These are [img] at the beginning of the URL and [/img] at the end. There will be no spaces between the tags and the URL. When you actually save the post the attachment will lose the ‘&stc=1’ at the end, but it doesn’t matter – the system will still interpret it correctly.

Click on ‘Preview Post’ and you will see a preview of what your post will look like.

If it all looks correct, click on ‘Submit Mesaage’.

Another way to get an image is to store it in our Gallery. After you have saved the image, open it and you will see a window labeled ‘BB Image Code’. You can copy the contents of that window and paste it into your post. It will already be formatted with image tags.

You can also use an image from another website.

When you find an image you want to use you can Right Click on the image, select ‘Properties’ and you will bring up a window that will show you the entire URL of the image.
Highlight the entire URL and copy it.

Paste it into your post – again enclosing it in image [img] tags [/img].

Click on ‘Preview Post’ and see if it displays properly. If it all looks good, click on ‘Submit Post’ .

All of these same tricks can be used to put small images in your signature, such as a ‘Visited States’ map or other small images. You would just surround the URL with image tags and put it in your signature.

Following is the text from another post I made about creating the Visited States map:

First go to: http://www.epgsoft.com/VisitedStatesMap/

Build a map with the states you visited, choose the size and format. Follow the instructions on the website and save the picture using a right mouse click and 'save picture as'. Then you need to store the picture on some website - you can use the gallery on this website. If you use our gallery you will see a location labled 'BB Image Code:' under your image after you upload it. Copy that entire line and paste it in your signature.

After that is done all you need to to do is enclose the full URL in the image tags - my image files look like this :

http://www.prades.net/images/VisitedStatesMapsm.jpg
http://www.prades.net/images/VisitedProvincesMapsm.jpg

If you click on either of the above links, the picture will open in a browser window so that you can see the size.

If you enclose the URL in image tags it will look like this:

PHP Code:
[img]http://www.prades.net/images/VisitedStatesMapsm.jpg[/img]
You will note that I have created two images, one for the US states and the other for the Canadian provinces. You also want to keep the size small, so that you don't overwhelm your posts. Mine are about 80 pixels high.
