Cool New Lift in the Garage!

I'm pleased to announce that we have a new lift in our garage. We drove to Indianapolis after work on Friday, picked it up at Greg Smith Equipment Sales, stopped at BMW Indy on the way home (of course), and set it up last night and today.

The lift is a Direct Lift Pro-Cycle XLT DT (I think that's the entire name ). I chose this brand based on related threads from this site. The "XLT" refers to the side extensions -- 12" on each side, including the approach ramp. The "DT" refers to the "drop tail" feature, where the rear section of the lift table can be removed to make working on the rear tire, brakes, etc. much easier. With a 1000# rating it can handle the LT; with the side extensions it can handle ATVs, lawn mowers, etc., and it only needs 90 psi. The side extensions will also make it easy to park the LT on the lift, if I need to do that. Right now I don't, as there is sufficient room in the garage to give the lift its own bay.

The cool thing is this: I rode into the garage after the ride home from work on Friday, as usual. In front of the spot where I park the bike was a large "Happy Sweetest Day" sign. It wasn't until I got off the bike and looked at the stall next to the bike's that I noticed the area had been cleared of the clutter we inherited, and swept clean. I thought that was my Sweetest Day gift, and would have been happy with that. Then, Mrs. hschisler tells me we're off to Indy to pick up the lift. Very cool.

The first photo shows Lisa w/the sign. The second photo shows the lift. This thing is huge...

It goes without saying that the lift is here for anyone who wants to use it. Of course, now I'll have to host some more Tech Sessions! (and I'd be happy to do that)

Re: New Lift in the Garage!

That is REALLY a great looking lift! You'll love having one! Congrats! And, BTW, just be sure you don't let the air hose get trapped under those wheels while a 920 lb LT is on the lift! We had that happen one time and almost never got the dang thing down. Couldn't lower or raise the lift (hose was smashed), and with the bike on it, it was too dang heavy to move! Sure was a catch-22 !!!

Re: New Lift in the Garage!

Congrats Howard!
It looks much wider than my import from Harbor Freight. I've had my K75 up on it, but not the LT yet because I have to build a side portion to feel comfortable to get the big gal up there! I did get the front wheel chock which makes a big difference.

Looks like you are about ready for some serious wrenching!

Re: New Lift in the Garage!

I readily admit that a Project Day for me is changing a turn signal bulb. I'm not a qualified mechanic or anything approaching "qualified", but with this little (BIG) gem I can comfortably do fluid and tire changes. You'll never see me doing a clutch change or anything electrical, but with the lift and the Paul Sayegh videos I bought I may get brave enough to take the plastic off of the beast.

I've done exactly one oil change on my LT, and that was on the floor of the garage at STC last spring. John Zeiler's tutelage showed me that I could do it, and the concrete floor showed me that I want to do it standing up!

I'm working on connecting a retractable air hose reel nearby.

Jack -- regarding the warning on the air hose: the way this unit is set up you run the hose over the scissor supports; even when the table is all the way down the hose doesn't get smashed. I am, however, thinking of routing the exposed portion of hose through a small-diameter galvanized or plastic pipe, to prevent it from being crushed under the movable front wheels. The hose can also be routed to the front of the lift, and may be some day I'll have an overhead air line for that.

The lift has optional 12" extensions on each side. I'd say the standard width (minus extensions) is typical of others I've seen. The additional 24" (total) width comes in handy for tools, parts, laptop, and leaving other crap on it.

My original thinking was to park the LT on it each day. The side extensions mean I wouldn't have to TRY to make something to serve the same purpose, as many of you have done. Stepping off the LT while it's on the lift would be a bit of a challenge without the extensions -- home-made or store-bought.

Stop in any time!

I have relatives in San Antonio. They used to live in the Hill Country, near Kerrville, I believe. Beautiful part of the country.

Kewl! Hey... I wonder if there are any blank voter registration forms left?

Thanks, Howard! I sure do "need" a ride... we are going to San Antonio on Saturday so I can Baptize a newborn at the Air Force hospital... We go a couple times a year...usually.

If you are EVER down this way, let me know.. Phyllis and I would love a reason to go back....

Who said anything about actually wrenching on the thing? I just wanted the lift to make it easier to polish the wheels!

But seriously, I'm going to attempt a solo oil change soon. I no longer have any excuses.
