Excuse me while I scream

The Texas Department of Public Safety, whom issues Texas Drivers Licenses, has passed a new rule. You now have to prove you are legally in this country to get a drivers license.

Man. You won't believe the ballyhoo this has caused. Every organization that has letters in it's name are beating drums. Chants of, "This isn't fair" are being reverberated across the state. Statements of, "This will cause these folks to not be able to get insurance" (as if they carry insurance anyway), cascade like diarrhea from concerned lips.

What do y'all think? Should an illegal alien be able to get a drivers license? How about a State Issued ID card?

Though the Texas Department of Public Safety aren't elected, this hapening right before the election is interesting.

I can only agree with this. No and NO on both counts. Giving illegals a legal document? 'scuse me? Exactly WHY?

Oh and to make it better if caught driving without a license, send 'em back where ever they came from.

Re: Excuse me while I scream

I agree. My family immigrated when we were tots and nobody handed us anything. My father busted his ass to give us every opportunity. My brothers and I served in the military. While I want opportunity for people to be able to be American, handing out licenses and welfare to undocumented aliens is ridiculous.

But, I will say I hate the fact that some people that were BORN in the USA need to get a grip and start appreciating what immigrants contributed to making this a great nation. Sorry if i got off the subject....

Re: Excuse me while I scream

The ironic thing right now is the effect massive immigration (both legal and illegal) is having on our social fabric. People have ignored that many of the people who have been coming here are coming from Socialist (or worse) countries, it's really no surprise that without controlling immigration and giving people a chance to assimilate there is a huge upswell of Socialism happening right now. Mosty as a result of not creating conditions to force people to assimilate - a la government paperwork in multiple languages, etc. we're beginning to see multiple generations of people who feel more tied to their ancestral land than to America.

Very true. The Irish, Italians, Poles, Germans and on and on BUILT this country man. Of course today the big joke is to say that white people won't do the jobs immigrants will do - completely ignoring the contributions those people made while creating this country.

Deport'em all to Socialistan. Then either nuke'em, or send Joe to manage them. Yeah...That's it.

Hey! I always thought USA had the "melting pot" approach to assimilating foreigners? Here we have (I think we still do) the "cultural mosaic" stance. The jury's still out on which one is more effective.

The only other difference is that they would have to land here in a flying saucer, for us to call them "aliens".

Re: Excuse me while I scream

I agree with you. I don't know how you feel about this, but when I see young Americans of immigrant decent waving other countries flags and protesting issues such as this, I want to puke. As Americans, we should agree or disagree on issues that affect THIS country, and not start waving other countries flags because a particular race or people are being affected by our policies.
Enough from me on this topic. My parents brought me up to appreciate what we have, and I have raised my sons to do the same. I can only do my part and hope this current insanity from our government makes a drastic improvement in the near future.
Ok, I'm off my soapbox. Back to lurking on the board.....

Re: Excuse me while I scream

A few years ago, California toyed with the idea of letting illegal immigrants get driver's licenses. Being an LEO, I wasn't completelt opposed to the idea. If we did it, I thought there should be benefit for letting someone get their driver's license. Being that we don't deport illegal aliens for minor violations of the law, most are going to drive. My idea was to obtain all finger prints, palm print, DNA sample, and require them to provide proof of insurance every year (pre paid insurance which can't be canceled). Because illegal aliens don't really have any paperwork, they can change their names if they commit a crime, and law enforcement has a very difficult time trying to capture them. If we had all their finger prints, DNA, etc, we have a better chance at catching them.

The insurance is a big one, I'm sick of taking hit and run collisions.

But majority of them did it legally! And They conformed to the rules and language because they were minorities, now they are quickly becoming the majority. It amazes me they left where they were because of various reasons but want to change the USA to what they left!

It'll happen if Obama gets elected. Count on it.

I've noticed a commercial on TV now where a lawyer is seeking out decendents of the Mexican landgrants from back around or before statehood to see if they're eligible for mineral rights. WTF????

Hey, I don't have a problem with immigrants. THE ONES WHO DO IT LEGALLY.

What I have a problem with is the expenditure of BILLIONS of dollars to support a group of people who BROKE THE LAW by entering this country and continue BRAKE THE LAW by staying here.

This country was built by immigrants, and the means by which someone enters this country legally and becomes a citizen needs to be upheld. This flood of illegal immigration needs to be stopped.

If steps had been taken along these lines decades ago I would wager it would have drammatically reduced the number of illegal aliens in the USA already. But what does congress want to do? Build a wall.

Re: Excuse me while I scream

It made a big headline here today in El Paso in the Sunday paper.
Of course the headline is critical of the plan...but then again this
is El Paso...on the border...95% hispanic...fighting the border fence
(which is quite nice btw...I see it all the time).

Some blood-boiling excerpts from the article:
http://www.elpasotimes.com/news/ci_10698783

The article says "New driver's license requirements...will push more people into the shadows, create a bureaucratic mess, and make Texas roads more dangerous." say immigrant advocates.

"This is just a trainwreck." said Kathleen Walker, an immigration attorney. "It unfortunately shows just a fundamental lack of understanding of how federal immigration law works," Walker said, "and it's going to cause a lot of confusion."

Texans for Sensible Immigration Policy, a coalition of construction companies, urged Perry to reconsider the DPS rules. "This will force more workers further into the shadows. It will only exacerbate our problems with uninsured drivers. It will make Texas roads less safe," wrote Norman Adams, a co-founder of the group.

Luis Figueroa, legislative attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said printing noncitizens' immigration status on their identification cards or licenses could also raise the specter of discrimination.
"That might make it harder for them to get rental apartments, to get a bank account or to do any kind of normal business," he said.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
State Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon, D-San Antonio, wrote a letter Friday asking Public Safety Commission Chairman Allan Polunsky to rescind the rule.

State Rep. Norma Chávez, D-El Paso, said the rules were the result of political pandering in a volatile election year.

((((I say VOTE these two ladies OUT OF OFFICE!!!))))
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Gov. Rick Perry praised the DPS initiative and said it would make licenses safer and prevent identity theft. "Texas is a great place to live and work, and while we welcome legally documented individuals to the Lone Star State, we must ensure that this privilege is not abused by those seeking to enter our country illegally,"

I was wondering... what part of illegal alien don't THEY get?
Might be easier to round them up. Offer to let them get drivers liscense, when they come in to apply, ship them out.

ADD never started all these silly, unregulated, ever-expanding social programs that EVERYBODY has access to.

PLUS serious enforcement against businesses that hire illegals.

On a side note we also had a high ranking official selling drivers license. Obama had some good teachers.

Re: Excuse me while I scream

Doing it by the book...

Here is how I got here and what I had to do to become a citizen. It seems to me like we have a perfectly reasonable set of laws and regulations on the books. Is it not illegal for government agencies not to enforce laws?

My company (VW) wanted me to work in the US. They guided my thru the process to get a B12 (?) visa. The process took about 4 month and the visa had to be issued in Germany since I was a German citizen. I was working for VW in South Africa at the time. This meant a trip to Germany to appear in person at the US consulate nearest my last residence in Germany.

When after three years in the US I decided to stay here and become a citizen I made it my challenge to do it without a lawyer. I'll spare you the details, but it took about a year of paper work and several trips to the INS office in Atlanta. The final step before the swearing in was a verbal and written quiz about American history and government with questions that 99% of the American public could not answer, but I had studied. Frankly, I found the process cumbersome and bureaucratic, but: I was the one that wanted to live here, and that means that I have to comply with this countries laws and regulations.

I get very irritated when illegal immigrant are given the same rights that I had to earn by following the law. BTW: There were no forms or study guides available in German, but all kinds of stuff in Spanish.

In my opinion, we don't need new laws but rather enforce what's on the books already. Congratulations to the Texas DPS for a common sense approach. Why should you have the privilege to drive a car in Texas if you knowingly broke the law to get here. Makes no sense to me.

True Wolfgang - driving is a privilege - NOT a right.

FWIW, my grandfather arrived on the Olympic (the sister ship of Titanic, but with better luck!) with a few pennies in his pocket. He was fluent in 4 languages - none of them English. At the "suggestion" of the immigration officials, he decided to change his last name from "Hohl" to a "more American sounding name", of "Hall".

From the day he landed in America, he had one rule that all had to obey in his house - English Only! That forced everyone to learn the language, and assimilate.

An example in the socialist utopia, better know as Kommyfornia: illegal chick is driving. She nuts up, skids off the road into a canal, and kills her two kids, who are also in the same vehicle. The state ends up paying her millions!

WTF You're thinking a chick who should not even be in the country to begin with and should not be driving because she has no driver's license, gets millions? Yup! CalTrans (the state) was negligent because the roadway did not have the proper crash barriers.

Aww WTF! It's no stupider than bailing out AIG.

Thanks Channing! I am not sure it is a better country, but the treasury is a little better off. I have paid in quite a bit over the years and not availed myself of any government programs. With some luck, I may draw SS in a few years and get Medicare benefits.
