Why are political discussions being locked?

Seems like this has been happening a lot lately. I don't get it - as long as everyone is being civil and following the forum rules. I don't think I've seen anything rancerous or out of bounds...

I thought this is what makes America great.

Oh well, like it's been said many times before this web site is NOT a democracy.

Guess I'll go log into www.Slate.com and Doonesbury for some political yuks...

Ron;

I am unaware that it is happening 'a lot' lately. I remember one recently. I would be happy to look into it if you can point me to some of the threads that have been closed lately.

Re: Why are political discussions being locked?

I just found one you started today, that was closed after two replies. I honestly do not know why it was closed or who closed it. I see no reason it should have been. I will try to find out who and why. I still want to be directed to others.

Here's another one:

...granted, it was getting rather "obtuse" - but I have always valued Ken's and Jay's opinions.

...and for the record Jesse Helms IMHO was representative of the WORST this country ever had to offer - but at least he was an equal opportunity hater.

Gee, I feel better now since I got my comment in after all!

Peace out.

Re: Why are political discussions being locked?

Hi,

I'm not one for joining in on any Political discussions, but reading some of the threads here, there are plenty that do.

If the Mods created a forum for these, like I've seen on other forums I'm a member of, those who wish to discuss politics can in an area that I and others can avoid.

There are plenty of political BBs around for this kind of stuff. The other BBs I belong to either prohibit politics or have a separate section.

I personally, am happy to be rid of Jesse. As a native North Carolinian, he is still a source of embarrassment to this state. He never represented me, of course, neither does Elizabeth Dole. If his funeral wasn't 150 miles away today, I'd be tempted to go dance outside.

Maybe, just maybe, most of us use this site for talking motorcycles. In this day of endless looped news, we get so much we're sick of it. Being able to talk bikes and all things associated with bikes is quite an escape. Especially when the weather has us locked in.

I hope you don't take offense but if politics is your thing, maybe you could start a brand new forum so then you could talk on and on about whatever political matters you like.

Agreed. But this is the Chit Chat forum, where folks come to discuss all those things that don't directly pertain to bikes. When you get tired of hanging out in the garage kickin' tires and tellin' lies, it's nice to pop out on the porch and chat about other things. And remember, all the forums here are voluntary.

No offense taken - but apparently it's OK to talk religion - not politics.

Take a look at the most recent thread toady...

I know what's going on here: a REPUBLICAN CONSPIRACY - Yeah, that's the ticket!

Actually, it has been shown in the past that both, religion and politics are both subjects that do nothing but polarize the readers and should therefore be avoided. Yes, this is ChitChat, but at the same time, if you want to talk politics, then why not use one of the many forums out there that are specifically set up for just that purpose.

And if ANYBODY believe they sway only one vote left or right because of something they post somewhere in an internet forum, I'd like to talk to you. I still have this bridge for sale in Manhattan.

Andy, I think you should reconsider. Think of Chit Chat as a cocktail party where the guests are members of the forum. If you hosted a cocktail party at your home, I don't think you would attempt to censor conversations. So why do it here?

The reason why going somewhere else to talk politics doesn't work is because the community is here -- the community that you and Randy and Jeff created. Asking this community to go elsewhere, seems counterproductive to everything you've worked so hard for.

And believe it or not, as polarizing as the discussion may be, some of us do get something out of them.

Regards,
-joel

Censorship: The assassination of an idea.

Like I said, it's OK to have religious discussions ad nauseum like the recent "bible" row with Joe - but politics, NAH.

Where IS Just Joe anyway?? Has he been put out to pasture??

No, it is NOT OK. We have closed threads about religion and politics in the past, and we will do it in the future. Sometimes we let it go a little bit longer and sometimes the fuses are shorter (like political discussions in an election year), but in the end it comes down to the discretions of the administrators if and how long a thread that borders one of the 'taboo' areas goes or does not go. If you do not want to have your threads closed I'd suggest you stay away from religion and politics, because those two have in the past created problems over and over again. Is it so hard to avoid that? Kind of strikes me as yelling "FIRE" in the movie theater. Well, not exactly but knowing you will raise hackles and still doing it ... You get the picture.

Joe who? We have many Joe's here actively participating. I hope we can get a Joe to answer your call for a Joe.
