FYI: I know Ron Paul isn't running, but when I ran this poll over at AdvRider.com, there was enough interest to add him to the list.

I didn't want to skew the vote in a landslide for Grif.

If you only get to vote for your local rep as opposed to the actual person you want as pres - how do you get one of those others in? Or are they all running local reps?
Will it ever happen that you get someone other than republican or democrate?

Re: If BMWLT.com were the US voting public...

I would like to see a poll asking who would you vote for if you didn't care about the consequences of your vote. I am afraid that if I voted for the candidate that most closely reflects my political feelings that I could be inadvertently helping to elect someone that I strongly oppose. In the end, I am again forced to choose the lesser of two evils.

Interesting to look at the websites of some of the lesser known candidates. I had no idea so many people actually were running for office

Your map clearly shows the green party as having 1 state. Yet the chart shows that Cynthia McKinney has no votes

Read this. It will explain the system enough to confuse you.

With all the money behind the democrat and republican parties, it would be very difficult to have a independent or third party candidate win a presidential election. Independent candidates have won some local elections and state Governorships. I think the closest we have come to electing an independent is the election of 1992 when Ross Perot had some early momentum, but sputtered late in the cycle. At one point in mid-summer, Perot led the polls with 39% (versus 31% for Bush and 25% for Clinton). In the election he received 18.9% of the popular vote (but no electoral college votes).

We may have a successful independent candidate again, but he or she will probably need to spend some of their personal fortune as Perot did, in order to get any attention.

Rather than a non-vote, wouldn't it be better to cast a vote in protest for one of the non-mainstream candidates? Or write-in your preferred candidate. I think the news of a write-in candidate or a Cynthia McKinney getting an "unusual" number of votes would be very telling.

Being from a state where Cynthia McKinney was elected to the House of Representatives, I wouldn't touch her with a hundred foot pole that I owned or anyone else's for that matter.

And Bob Barr ran as and was elected as a Republican for one term out of Georgia. Another candidate that I wouldn't touch with a hundred foot pole. The only reason he's running as a Libertarian, is it's the only place he can get on the ticket.

The funny thing is, they used to say that about W, two terms ago. So far, I don't see very much difference between the two.

I just wish we had two-term limits on all political offices. And anyone who wants to run for office should be excluded for that reason alone. Make it a civic duty that everyone has to do, where they just want to get in, get the job done, and get out.

And kill the whole lobbyist network completely. You wanna change something? Then you get one vote, just like the rest of us.

Re: If BMWLT.com were the US voting public...

She's the most popular US politician in HISTORY if you look at her approval rating since becoming Governor. Her numbers run in the 90%+ approval rating. She's a bit of a conundrum, as she is equally respected by both Republicans and Democrats.

She's 44 and quite the looker, if you ask me.
