Where's Howard

Hey Howard?

You home yet?

I would love to here some details of your trip! And pics if you got that card thing fixed, and they laugh at my trusty 35mm.

Re: Where's Howard

Yep; we got home late yesterday afternoon. Card reader is still broken, AND I am out of disk space so even if it was working I couldn't copy any more digital pics to the laptop.

I was going to write up the story and post it under Ride Tales, but here is the Reader's Digest version:

miles traveled: 3,648
maximum miles in 1 day: 581
minimum miles in 1 day: 162
days on the road: 11
new states visited on a motorcycle: NE, MN, SD, MT, WY
new states visited for the first time: MT, WY
# of cities we stayed in or traveled through, where tornados actually were present while we were there: 3

Things seen or done
  • Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum (Springfield, IL; in its own way, as stirring and emotional, at least for us, as Mt. Rushmore. WELL worth the time.)
  • Lincoln's Tomb (Springfield, IL)
  • Wall, SD (had to see stop there after seeing 100 bilboards on I-90 advertising Wall Drug; boring)
  • the Badlands (a must-do)
  • the Black Hills (Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, Iron Mountain Road, Custer State Park wildlife loop, Highways 16 & 16A)
  • Sturgis (new tires)
  • Devil's Tower (a must-see; must have dinner at the Ponderosa Cafe)
  • Mt. Rushmore (the original goal of this trip; every red-blooded American should see this)
  • Deadwood, SD (walked around downtown, spent 25 on a slot machine; the trolley ride around town is fun, especially in the evening hours as the party-goers ride it)
  • Crazy Horse Memorial (didn't think it would be worth it, but absolutely it is)
  • Highway 34 across SD (a nice drive that shows a different part of the state than I-90; very remote)
  • Pierre, SD (toured the capitol; very impressive)
  • geographic center of the US (50 states): Belle Fourche, SD
  • Jolly Green Giant statue (Blue Earth, MN)
  • wind farms in north-central IA
  • flooding: in Cedar Rapids , and countless thousands of acres of fields elsewhere
  • Iowa's Largest Frying Pan (Brandon, IA)
  • Amana Colonies (Amana, IA. Very interesting historical area; take the museum tour.)
  • Davenport, IA and Rock Island Arsenal, IL (to show my wife a couple of places I lived as a child)
  • Amish country (Shipshewana, IN)
  • Amish country (NE OH)

Re: Where's Howard

howard, sounds like a great trip. I've been away from the forum for quite a while and have some catching up to do. It looks like you still have the LT too. Good to hear.

It was a great trip, Bill.

We're wondering if you got your LT repaired and are back in the saddle...

Re: Where's Howard

Thanks Howard

We plan on visiting quite a few of the same places in SD as you did and then will be heading down to Colorado for two days. Then doing a beeline across I70 to get back for work on Wed.

I will be detouring around Ceder Rapids also, we had planned a route right through there, but I think that is out of the question.

Glad to here you made it safe and will give you a call tonight.

Glen
PS where did you get tires? Sturgis BMW? I want to stop there and get a shirt that says Sturgis BMW,for all my Harley buddies who where their Sturgis shirts and hav'nt been within 1000 miles of there.

Yes, we got new tires at Sturgis Yamaha-BMW-Suzuki. As I mentioned on the phone, the tires were the cheapest I've ever bought, and they charged only $15 per tire to demount/remount/balance. $494 out the door for 2 tires at a dealership. Unbelievable.

They also have several T-shirts. You can get one that says "Sturgis Yamaha", one that says "Sturgis Suzuki", or one that says "Sturgis BMW". Your choice, same price.
