Question for anyone from Iowa

First off let me say I hope the state is in better shape than the MEDIA is showing in the nightly news coverage? Some terrible flooding and a lot of work ahead for residents of Iowa.

Second, can anyone from Iowa tell me what the best EAST to WEST route might be at this time for crossing your state. We will be traveling through there this week, and my route has me going right through CEDAR RAPIDS whice does not look too good at this time.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks
Glen

Re: Question for anyone from Iowa

It is best to stay North. It isn't the best time for site seeing as most of the scenic, southern roads are closed.

I would recommend taking HWY 20 from Dubuque. You can cross the entire state... it is very boring, 65 mph and straight.

If you want a more southern route, you could take HWY 20 to I-35 and drop south to I-80 here in Des Moines. It is open to the western border....

Let me know if you need more...

Re: Question for anyone from Iowa

Thanks for the response, I will be coming in from Peoria Il, so I guess I will head north out of there and then pick 20 west and head to souix falls SD. It looks like it will add a few miles but what can you do!

Thanks

Re: Question for anyone from Iowa

You could take Hwy 34 across the southern part of the state, but I am not guaranteeing anything... I was on Hwy 34 the other day near Griswold, IA and I ran into a closure....

Maybe someone else will chime in about Hwy 34? For now, I-80 is closed, but it may open by the time you leave on your trip....

PM me if you need more or a cell number in case of troubles while travelling thru the area....

John

Glen, IIRC you are leaving on the 19th. Give me a call some time before then and I'll give you my take on must-see things in SD and points west.

You guys are going to have a great time!

Re: Question for anyone from Iowa

Stay clear of Cedar Rapids. I was just up there today and it's a mess. I think rt 34, should be okay, also Rt 30 and of course Interstate 80 if you don't mind super slab.

Re: Question for anyone from Iowa

Thanks for the info

Please keep it coming if you can! route 34 was my next option after hearing CedarRapids is still under water. I will be going from Peoria to Soiux Fall Sd and looking for a minimum number of detours if possible.

Re: Question for anyone from Iowa

I-80 is open across the state now.... I travel the state for work and you couldn't believe the crop, home, and infrastructure damage. It is very sad.

Now SE Iowa is a problem and soon to be St. Louis......

Throughout the entire mess, we only had one case of looting and the guy was caught in the act. Amazing!!
