Heading to Iowa 4th of July weekend. Hope the weather breaks

I will be leaving Connecticut on the 28th and will be heading to Sigourney Iowa for 10 days to attend a family gathering … I sure hope it doesn’t start raining when I hit Ohio… and rain the whole time

Hi,

Shame you won't be a little closer to Clinton, I just got my Great Great GrandFather and Mothers death certificates sent over, and they are both listed as Buried in Oakview Cemetery in Welton. Two of their Sons are buried there too.

Pperhaps one of your relatives if they are in the area could save me about $1000 in round trip airfare and snap a couple of pictures.

Rgds

Hi Doug,

I've taken a closer look, and done some mapping, I'd be asking you to do a 260 mile round trip, just to get me a few photos. If it was half the distance, I'd say go for it, and Thank You.

Trip: 131.4 mi, 2 hr 11 min
1 Depart SR-149 / N Main St 2 Turn right to stay on SR-92 / SR-149 / E Jackson St 1.2 mi
3 Turn left to stay on SR-149 11.6 mi
4 Turn left to stay on SR-149 / Davis St 9.6 mi
5 Keep right to stay on SR-149 / 290th St 3.2 mi
6 Turn left to stay on SR-149 / Hatter St 7.1 mi
7 Take ramp right and follow signs for I-80 East 75.6 mi
8 At exit 295B, take ramp right for US-61 North toward Eldridge / Dewitt 22.9 mi
9 Make a U-turn at Main St / US-61 10 Arrive at Welton, Clinton, Iowa, United States The last intersection is Main St / US-61
Welton, Clinton, Iowa, United States,

Just a tad too far I think, as your going to visit family. I've sent a couple of mails off to the Iowa Family history society, and will see if I can get a local researcher to make the trip for me. I spend time here in the UK in records offices looking up for US based folks, so I may strike lucky with a kind soul who lives local. My first glance at the map didn't focus my eyes on the scale, and what looked like a short trip is longer than I first thought.

Thanks very much for the offer, but if between now and then I have no joy with the history society, I may still come back to you.

Re: Heading to Iowa 4th of July weekend. Hope the weather breaks

We are on our way home and came through Cedar Rapids, Iowa yesterday. The videos you may have seen don't do it justice, and it's worse today than it was yesterday. We turned east on I-80 after leaving Cedar Rapids and made it through a few hours before it was scheduled to be closed.

Downtown is completely flooded, as you have seen. And, the same is true everywhere we have been in Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. Thousands of acres under water. What a shame for the farmers and homeowners affected by this.

Be flexible in your plans; the major roads (except for I-80) should be OK, and that one should be open by the time your trip is a go.

Sound like some folks are having a bit of a rough time. we had the flooding last year, our house escaped as it's on a slight incline, but lots of peple close by lost everything. Some are still living in mobile homes while the properties are repaired. My heart goes out to all those people affected by the strange weather we seem to be getting all over the world.

Fingers crossed, the weather gets better. I can imagine farming folks having a rough time with crops being lost to the rain.

As long as your sure about taking a detour, this links to MSN maps, which pinpoints oakview

I was looking for a couple of headstone pictures if they are still standing after all this time.
My Great Great Grandfather and Mother are both Buried in Oakview Cemetery Welton Iowa, as well as their two sons. The US Genweb archive have a listing of burials for Oakview, but it’s an incomplete list as the work was never completed. I got copies of the two Death Certificates sent over from the Iowa records Office last week and they show them both being buried at Oakview, and the listing I have has their two sons in Oakview too. I'm trying to close a chapter on the family history, and if a marker stone still stands get the Son's of the Confederate Veterans to tend his grave. James joined the Confederates and fought for 4 years, odd thing for a Scots born chap to do.

Cemetery: Oakview: Welton Twp., Clinton Co., IA

Cornwall James Steel 1921
Cornwall Jane 1928
Cornwall J. S., JR 1941
Cornwall LAURENCE 1903

I have about 30 relatives, mainly distant in the same place, but these are the ones most important to me.

If anyone else out there has any Family History queries, I'd be happy to help, have access to an awful lot of records both in the UK and US.

Rgds

Re: Heading to Iowa 4th of July weekend. Hope the weather breaks

OK Guys, Hold it,

I found a site tonight with pictures, I've only been looking for like years, and tonight I bloody stumble on it. Wayne (aka wmal) rode there today and took some pictures, and after he's done that I go and find an internet site with the very thing I'm after.

Thanks to those who offered and a special thanks to Wayne who did the trip today. One thing I did find, the listing for the Cemetery is wrong, I found the Cornwall boys sister buried right next door, and she isn't listed on the USGenWeb.

The attached is Lydia Peterson's (Nee Cornwall) husband's grave, she is marked to the right, and her brothers graves are behind, I have a close up of that too.

The problem this year is that they have not been able to plant any crops yet...

I think these are the coordinates to the cemetery 41.919679,-90.60303 (I used Google Earth)

But it sounds like your all set

Mike,

Sent you a few pics. None as good as that one, though.
