I paid $4.78/gal this morning for a fillup myself. California... tsk. Better than filling the car though... and still cheaper than gas in Europe!

I feel your pain. I filled up our boat this weekend for the grand total of $390.
It should last us a few weeks though. I know we should not complain we are fortunate enough to have recreation vehicles.

I don't understand what you guys are whining about?

It only cost me $2.62 cents to fill up my tank yesterday and I'll get 115 miles before I have to fill it up again. The delivery guy in the HUGE tanker truck standing about 50 feet away watching me was laughing his ass off.

Me too.

Re: OK now gas prices have gone to far!

I can remember when gas cost $0.09 per gallon . Gas war lowered it to $0.07 per, an they checked the oil, tire pressure, wiped all the windows and gave you GREEN STAMPS. Tank full and you got change for that $1.00 bill.

Guess when that was?

At these prices, my bike has moved out of the "recreation" category. It seems with others as well. I can no longer find motorcycle parking at work. All spots are full by 7:45AM. Its getting close to the point where we are going to be lining up for the spots the third shift is vacating.

Question Re: OK now gas prices have gone to far!

FWIW:
Crude oil cost $10 per barrel in January of 1861, by June it fell to $0.50 and then to $0.10. By Sept 1863 it was back up to $7.25. What would that be in todays dollars?

Re: OK now gas prices have gone to far!

Rode through a small town in PA that had $4.29 for regular unleaded three weeks ago. The station was next to the boarded up Burger King, Pizza Hut and some other nasty looking dollar store place (closed). My heart goes out to the people in the small towns who make crap in salary and are paying HUGE transportation costs . Metro areas are bad off as well but at least there are some jobs that pay.

went from a sometime (nice weather) commuter to almost daily.

According to my trusty inflation calculator, $10 in 1861 would be worth approx $228 in 2007 dollars.

There are so many ways to look at this, but here is a link to a chart of average annual prices through year-end 2007:
