At what age do you give kids/grandkids rides?

When it is my time to go I want to go like my grandfather, quietly in my sleep. Not like the other passengers in his car.

Re: At what age do you give kids/grandkids rides?

I give my 9 y/o godson rides around town. He likes the radio and waving at his friends.

He races mini-motocross and I make him wear all his gear while riding with me....

Re: At what age do you give kids/grandkids rides?

The reason I am asking is that I have an 8 year old granddaughter that wants to ride and I am hesitant.

As soon as there feet touch the foot pegs. My granddaughters both started around 8. Now 10 and 12 and the oldest has well over 2000 miles under her belt. We will try to add a few hundred more this weekend. ATGATT is a must to ride with me and they both have all the gear and know to wear it. I do have adjustable rear floor boards and arm rest so that helps.

I started riding again just after my divorce in 1981. One weekend, my turn with my daughter, and we went for a short ride around town. She let me know in no uncertain terms that THAT is how I was taking her home! Then she proceeded to do a pretty good job of tying her stuff on the rack. She was 7. Helmet and gear required, of course. One time she was coming to town from grad school, and I emptied the Bushtec so I could pick her up at the airport. Never gets old!

Granddaughter will be riding with me in July. :-)

Re: At what age do you give kids/grandkids rides?

I also think feet touching the pegs is a good yardstick. If it is a touring bike with passenger armrests then the feet touching the foot pegs may be less critical. Also the experience level of the child has some influence as well. Some children start out on mini-bikes at very young ages. If they are already experienced riders then being a passenger shouldn't be a problem.

Of course a number of states have rider age restrictions.

Of course a number of states have rider age restrictions.
In California, at least, the law requires that the passenger reaches the footpegs. However there is no restriction as to the actual height so you can mount a higher set of footpegs for a child.

Re: At what age do you give kids/grandkids rides?

My Grandson is 12 and we will go on a seven day trip in late July (when it is good and hot...) Have taken him on short trips since he was 9. He loves it!

The gear from a friends wife fits perfect.
