Chevron is pissing me off!

Forget the greedy oil tycoons stealing our hard earned money with 5 dollar a gallon gas prices. Several weeks ago I took a 4k trip to NM and back. I try and use Chevron whenever I can. After several fill ups my credit card would no longer work at the pump. The screen would say " see cashier" I would try another card from another company and the same result. So, I go inside and the cashier took the very same card and it worked just fine. I asked her about it and her reply was.... That seems to happen to motorcyclists a lot. I called my bank and the card is fine with no restrictions. A couple hundred miles down the road the same thing happens. Go see stinking cashier. After this happened quite a few more times I became a bit pissed off. So, In to see the cashier again and give her an earful. She tells me that smaller transactions like motorcycle fill ups trigger a fraud alert. Then this weekend I take a ride across my home state of WA and after 2 or 3 fill ups it starts again. My bank says it all Chevron's doing not theirs. I guess I need to change to shell. Chevron does not want my money.

I have experienced this on a couple of long trips. Last time it happened It was just a long day and required 3 fill ups. I will no longer used Chevron unless I absolutely have too. It's just stupid. I'll give my money to someone else

Re: Chevron is pissing me off!

If you call the card company and tell them you ride a motorcycle and will have frequent uses of your card in a day they fix that for you. That's what I did.

It's not the card company that won't take the card at the pump. It's Chevron. All their stores are connected and after 2 charges in a day they cut you off and require that you see the cashier. Not gonna bother to call Chevron, doubt it would do any good.

I can use my AMEX ten times a day. It will always work (as long as I'm not at Chevron)

Re: Chevron is pissing me off!

It has nothing to do with Chevron. A lot of credit card companies have the same anti-fraud procedures. Whenever I go on a trip, I call American Express and let them know I am about to go on a trip.

Re: Chevron is pissing me off!

It's Chevron and it's been going on for years. I first noticed this about 5 years ago going across country. I don't beleive it has anything to do with fraud because the Credit card companies cover the first $75. I believe it's Chevron's way of pushing their gas card so they don't have to pay visa their cut. I was told by many different cashiers that I would never have the problem with the chevron card. In fact most pushed the application on me.
Because it's a pain in the ass, I don't use chevron if I have a choice.

BTW - I have notes on my credit cards that I travel and make a lot of gas purchases. This only happens at Chevron, no other stations.

Ya, what Sharkey said...

I called Chevron and explained the situation. They had me write to them and they opened the use equal to the credit line. done. The phone call was a start for me, perhaps it is all they require now, but a letter was needed 4 years ago.

I am not gonna call AND write a letter to a damn corporation and BEG them to take my money. I carry an AMEX and a Visa and will use Chevron ONLY if there is no other choice. Never had a issue with any other chain. It's all the same gas anyway.

Ive had similar problems with Chevron -- and Chevron only -- while traveling extensively in the US, using an AMEX card.

No issues with any other gasoline retailer.

Have you thought maybe they want you to enter the store, so you can buy other items! It can be a sales ploy, specially if you have kids along! They know that the kids could throw a screaming fit for that junk that surronds the register and ice cream. You are tired and comply instead of fighting with the kid! JUST A THOUGHT!

Re: Chevron is pissing me off!

I have experienced the same issue when traveling cross country on the bike using my own debit or credit cards. El Jeffe is right in the fact that if you are going to travel just let your credit card company in advance so there won't be a fraud alert/prevention disabling your card.
I just never paid attention if I had more issues at Chevron stations than anywhere else. Good to know!
So, should we boycott Chevron???

I was told the same thing by the Visa Card Company that I use. The last thing I want to have to tell someone that I do not know is that I am going on vacation. I am just too paranoid that they will give that information out to someone for a kickback, and then my house gets burglarized.

I explained that I take frequent long m/c trips but they could not be bothered. I also offered to give them in writing a waiver for any fraud charges over 1,000 - again they could not be bothered.

It's not only Chevron, I have had this happen to me with my ATM card many times. I have to phone the bank to get the restriction lifted but I am told there is no restriction, the card seem to work fine after the call.

On the other hand if someone stole your VISA Gold Card and used it to continuously fuel their gas guzzling Ford pickemup whilst they traveled from CA to NY, we'd have another thread bashing Chevron for letting them use y'alls card, right?

Re: Chevron is pissing me off!

I must have a better bank than you. Any charges I did not make, I do not have to pay for. Just call them up and there gone. Last year while traveling on my bike up Vancouver Island BC my CC quit working. I called the bank and they said they had charges that did not fit my profile. I asked, They said a charge came in for over a grand for some Coach handbags. It made my day that they shut them suckers down before they spent a penny of the banks money. They have never questioned a real purchase I have made. PS. The whole point of this thread was to warn you all of Chevron's tactics and to state That my new gas station of preference for my bike is now Shell.....

Re: Chevron is pissing me off!

Warning!
If you use a Debit card. At many stations they put a hold of $50 on the account as soon as you swipe the card at the pump. It is supposed to clear the hold and charge the actual amount of purchase after the transaction is completed. HOWEVER, it can take up to 3 days to clear at times. I have overdrafts to prove it. This has happened and Shell as well as Chevron.
I got nicked with an overdraft when we did the Tokeland ride. 2 stations had not cleared the $50 charge in the same day. My bank cleared the overdraft for me.

Your bank is correct - I had the same thing happen a few years back. Chevron sets fraud limits based upon purchases within certain timeframes. The hourly clerks behind the counter may not be aware of this.

Call or email Chevron from the contact info on their website. Tell them you have no problems at other gas stations. They will respond. They took my credit card info and raised my limit. btw - the risk in raising the limit goes to Chevron, not the consumer's bank, which is why the limits are set so low.

To follow-up on my earlier post, I found the email Chevron sent when this happened to me in 2005.

Below is the info Chevron sent - this will get you to a live person who can set a higher limit for your credit cards. I have not had any problems at Chervron since speaking w/ Diane:

Please contact me at the number below at your earliest convenience. We
can hopefully resolve the situation so that your card will again work
fine at the pumps.

Thank you,

Thanks Ted,
I just may call them and act like a highly disgruntled customer. Maybe then they will give me a thousand gallon credit. I just do not understand their reasoning. How many credit thieves go cross country and buy 4-6 gallons at a time?

I agree, and told them the same thing. It's their algorithm, and once you trip it, it takes about 2 weeks to reset. What really pissed me off is when you go inside and the clerks say everything is fine.

I explained all this to Diane, who was actually very nice and was in complete agreement. She said there is a lot of turnover and although the clerks should know, they many times do not. I told her to feel free to use my email at her next management meeting because if it wasn't for her, they'd have lost a customer.

My bank says it all Chevron's doing not theirs. I guess I need to change to shell. Chevron does not want my money.
I have the same problem with my Chase-BP card. When that happens, I just start using my USAA MC. I never had a problem with it, but I don't get free gas when using it. Pisses me off, too. Even when I call Chase and tell them what I'm doing, it doesn't help.

Shell has done that to me a coupla times back when I wuz frequently running 'tween Boerne and KS. I called after the 2nd time and they cleared my Shell card for a period of time that I knew I'd be running back and forth. Haven't had an occasion to try it since Feb '08, so will prolly call 'em if/when I head out on roundtrips again this summer.

Re: Chevron is pissing me off!

American Express use to do that to me.
....."see cashier" or "enter zip code"..........
I started calling them whenever we were going out of state and that fixed everything.

When going South, I also tell them if we're going into Mexico or not.
On long rides I put a cap on how much can be charged, and if I want to change it, it only takes a call.

All this helps prevent unauthorizrd use and because their phones do not require waiting 15 minutes to talk to someone, I really don't mind.
