Re: laptop not connecting

Reboot it again and reboot the router at the same time. How do you control the wireless card - through windows or the manufacturers utility? Chekc signal strength etc.

Re: laptop not connecting

If you're running Vista, first curse mickeysoft...then reboot the router. I've run into vista crashing my router and when I did a search for it...lo-and-behold..this is a "feature" of Vista that everyone seems to be contending with.

Re: laptop not connecting

When you say you completely rebooted your laptop, did you mean you completely REBUILT your laptop? A simple reboot should not cause the problem.

It could be coincidental that this occurred after your reboot, though, and it may not be the laptop. Try turning off the laptop, the router, and the modem. Then turn them on in reverse order after waiting for each to go through their self-diags procedure.

Re: laptop not connecting

Some laptops, Toshiba for instance, have a switch on the front to enable/disable the wireless adapter. Maybe the culprit in your case?

Re: laptop not connecting

Assuming you're running XP, you may need to go either to the "View Wireless Networks" in the system tray (disconnect and/or reconnect to the correct network) or go through "Diagnose Connection Problems" in Internet Explorer (follow step by step).

Mine will occcasionally hickup. I have also needed to "pull" the power off my wireless router and let it reboot.

For me, I'd reboot the wireless router, then the regular router, then try your laptop. If that doesn't work, go through the network things.

Thanks Mr. Gates.

Re: laptop not connecting

it is a Toshiba, with windows xp. Windows completely crashed, I had to get a boot disc from them and start over from the beginning so to speak. I have unplugged everything, router, cable modem and laptop, turned them all back on but still does not seem to help.

Well, if that's the case, did it install the correct driver for your wireless card? Is it a built in card or PCMCIA?

Re: laptop not connecting

it is a linksys card, came with the router. When I do a search for "wireless devices "it says "turn on wireless network device". I have looked everywhere for a switch or someting, but no avail.

Re: laptop not connecting

I have had good luck by going into the hardware manager and removing the device. Followed by a re-start and let it "find" the new hardware and it will re-load the drivers. Saved me a few times.

I agree with John. You may even want to physically remove your card (after going to Control Panel and removing the hardware). Reboot the comuter once, shut it down, then put the card back in and restart.

XP seems much better than other Windows at finding the hardware and required drivers.

If you can get another computer on line, you may want to (or HAVE to) go the Linxsys site and find the driver there to install.

Did they give you a CD with the hardware? You may already have it.

Don't you just love these new fangled devices?

This happened to me with my company issue Lenovo ThinkPad. At work, the HelpDesk kid came to my office pushed the switch and I could "see" the WiFi Gateway in th next room.

I completely rebooted my Belkin WiFi Gateway at home thinking that was the problem and then had to go back to the Internet to set up the security functions.

Felt really stupid. Never knew there was a mechanical switch.
