Son hit a deer

My son (26) was riding home from work at 2:00 a.m. yesterday morning on his YZF-R1 and hit a deer on the Saw Mill River Parkway in NY. Thank God he just broke the 2 bones in his lower left leg just above the ankle. Needed surgery and some hardware installed, but could have been much worse.

Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Ray

Re: Son hit a deer

Very sorry to hear about that. ;^\

I've had more close calls with deer in the short few weeks we've been riding starting last Oct, than I have in all the twenty or so years I did ride, way back when. The first ever test ride on the LT we now have, we missed a deer, literally by a hair. Thankfully I never saw it coming. There were three more near misses, and one hit with the car. I think about that just about every time I ride.

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery!!

Re: Son hit a deer

Hitting a deer has become my greatest concern riding here in Iowa. But riding after dark is something I try very, very hard never to do. The only real close call I had with a deer was after dark. That seems to be when they are most apt to be in the road for some reason only deer know. Hope your son recovers nicely.

Re: Son hit a deer

Living in deer country in NE Pa., every one of the close calls have the past six months have happened mid day, the deer we did hit, happened at dusk. Go figure. I don't feel safe anytime of day now. There are still plenty of fresh deer carcasses along the roads. And, we have the deer alerts on all our vehicles, and it does not seem to make any difference whatsoever.

Ok Ray, I will put him on my list!

I have been riding since 70, I hardly ever ride after dark anymore.
Hoofed rats everywhere you go in this country, even in my own back yard.
These kamikaze deer are born and bred just to jump out in front of motorcycles! If a motorcycle is around then they go for the cars!

Re: Son hit a deer

It's a scary prospect, hitting a deer. And on these parkways here in the northeast, ripping it up at 75 MPH or more on the tight twisties in traffic doesn't leave much room for error. And over the past several years the population has grown quite a bit. It's tough to ride anywhere in the northeast without seeing several of them trying to cross traffic.

Might your son recover quickly, fully and ride with spirit once again! All the best...

Re: Son hit a deer

I hate that road after dark and have let both my sons know that, but what do I know. I try never to ride after dark myself in general.

He is healing nicely and is feeling much better. Thanks for the prayers and good wishes.

Ray, I am so glad that he is healing nicely, deer and moose are my biggest concern every time it gets dark and I am, or my wife are riding. Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery I wish to your son. Take care

Re: Son hit a deer

I wish your son a speedy recovery. I wonder why the deer are getting to be such a big traffic hazard in the NE? Don't they hunt deer up there? Maybe need to bring in more predators like cougar or wolves.

Re: Son hit a deer

RiderRay -

I am glad to hear your son came through it with just a broken leg. Sorry it had to happen at this end of the riding season. My prayers are offered.

I don't know what its like out east, but here in the mid-west, I have seen more deer on the edge of the forests this year than anytime I can recall. It seems that they must have add an easy winter - why I do not know, as we had more snow that usual.

Bill

Prayer said for you and your son . . .

Deer are my biggest fear. I live in a large town. I've lived here for 60+ years and have never seen deer within the city limits. The other morning I looked out into my back yard and saw four!

Thumbs up Re: Son hit a deer

That is prob the ONLY real thing i worry about is hitting them. I can 'usually' plan and/or place myself out of harms way for the other folks on the road, but deer usually run right out in front of me(This happened on I-95 at 1 pm) all times of the day now in this area(Wash DC metro). I commute to work sometimes before dawn and i have my scan up constantly. Im glad that your son recovered. God answers prayer. Mikey
