Wireless Network setup assistance, please.

Getting nowhere fast on setting up some changes to my LAN at the casa.

History: have all Dell units; desktop running XP w/SP2; laptop running Windows ME; and a recently disabled older desktop running W98. The whole shebang wuz dis-assembled while Cheryl wuz having the casa re-carpeted. Just prior to that fun and entertaining event ; the Dell A920 printer blew a gasket (actually broke the ink cartridge carrier/holder), to which Dell's answer wuz "buy a new printer"! So I did - an HP All-in-one wireless, with Photosmart system.

Casa arrangement: (1) cable entry to the casa, only for computering,to a Cable modem, which feeds into a Linksys Wireless B router. Out of the router goes a cable to the XP Desktop. This arrangement let me use the old printer, in addition to a SkyPe phone program w/headset-mic, and a camera dump when I 'ocassionally' took a good enough picture to retain. (2) The downstairs laptop, used primarily by Cheryl for at-leisure shopping and buying, has a wireless adaptor card that talks to the upstairs router. All is good --- except, now that I don't have the old USB port-connected printer, I can't print nuttin'. I used the HP set-up/install CD, and when all the procedure wuz finished, wuz told to remove the USB wire, and run a test to see if the PC can find the printer --- it couldn't! So, I got to thinkin' that since the old printer wuz USB-ported, the PC prolly doesn't have a wireless adaptor attached. It doesn't, and there isn't one internally.

So, my question: can I remove the existing router-to-PC USB connection and install the wireless adaptor on the PC as a replacement, so that the PC can talk to the router like the laptop does; and the printer can work from both?

Sorry for the long post - I'm computer illiterate, as you can tell, and not always sure I've provided the right terms and described the situation clearly. A PM or two is encouraged so the message lists aren't bored with this!! Thanks in advance.

Re: Wireless Network setup assistance, please.

Your printer should talk directly to the router via the wireless. You'll have to go into each PC and map to the new printer.

Go into the router setup and under the wireless settings, you should be able to see all the devices attached to the router. In your case you should see the laptop (if it's turned on) and the printer.

Now, with all the said, if have security setup on the wireless side, then you will have to somehow enter the WEP code into the printer so it can talk to the router.

Confused even more now?

Yep!!! I got the WEP string, and the network group name, and some other key thangs.

I wonder if I just hookup the printer to the desktop by using the USB wire like I did on the old printer, would it work - even tho it's a wireless printer? In that situation, would the laptop be able to talk to the printer?

BTW - you need to come over and pick up your ratchet tie-downs. I put 'em upstairs by the new printer!!!

the answer is yes. it will be printing to a different usb "port" than the old one, but it will work either way.

you will need to share the printer once it is hooked up.

Re: Wireless Network setup assistance, please.

Well, well - thanks to all who responded, both here and by PM - the new printer works!! I've played with the USB wired hookup of the printer and that went smoothe. Then did the wireless thang, and that worked too. Got a well-explained 'mapping' PM from Graham over in the UK, and that really helped set me straight. I think my problem sometimes is, I read the destructions to literally and git intimidated by *what might happen*, instead of 'just do it'!!!

Thanks again to everyone who helped. Now Cheryl can take a break from carrying the sign ---
