Kittinger, the guy who presently holds the reccord lives near Orlando, Fl., and speaks at local events. His flight was really an experiment and it almost killed him. With todays technology, it seems it's just about whether you have enough or can raise enough money to do it.

Last year we were attempting to break a large formation record locally with 140 skydivers and 7 airplanes. We jumped from about 23,000 feet (using pure oxygen from 10,000 feet up till the jump) and had about a minutes and 45 seconds of free fall. Seven minutes of free fall sounds like a nice ride! Wish I had the cash!

Re: Madness beyond sky diving

When I was skydiving in the late 70's, I read about the typical HALO (high altitude low opening) jumps. They had to use mechanical wind-up timers to deploy their chutes because the typical HALO jump experience went like this:

Exit the aircraft on full oxygen - Face mask immediately frosts and freezes over - you don't see anything again until your on the ground and can thaw out your hands enough to get out your knife and cut off your helmet.

I decided then that I wasn't about to try any of those!
