Re: Flourescent bulb recycling?

I just threw away four of them last week. We have no recycling program here to really mention. I checked that site and I just do not want to drive to San Antonio just to take the trash out.

Re: Flourescent bulb recycling?

Yup those compact flourecent bulbs are "green" going in but they are "red" going out as they have always had mercury in them. What causes the phosophorus to glow is mercury vapor, rich in UV.

Now that we have interior sources of UV, the skin cancer rate will go up as well?

Re: Flourescent bulb recycling?

If the bulbs have green ends they are green bulbs. Made from more enviromental materials. Thats all you can buy around here now.

Actually the phosphor blocks the UV. I use bulbs that have no phosphor (i.e. naked) in units that I pump pond water through to kill the alge. The naked bulbs cost twice as much as the regular florescent. They all have mercury as it is the only material that gives off UV in a vapor. There is no green substitute.

Re: Flourescent bulb recycling?

John,
You are right, I did some research and the "green" bulbs still contain mercury. They report that they are better then incandesent bulbs in almost every way. That dude over at home depot misinformed me, Go figure.

Re: Flourescent bulb recycling?

Yeah, it is kind of hard to change Physics and the structure of chemical elements. If we could I would be turning that nasty lead into gold. Maybe once we master fusion...
