I can't believe how much CRAP it had loaded (from Dell) right outta the box. Does Google have their grimey little claws into everybody?!?! DAG!!! (That was a rhetorical question. Unfortunately!) I love Google as a search engine, but enough is ENOUGH!!!
I have 10+ in my domain now (I am not RED, but a MS AD site). They work fine, I personally am using 3 of them. 1 workstation, with dual 22" HD wide screens, and 2 different laptops. memory is cheap, get plenty, and you will not hear the bitching.
Printer compatability is getting much better, and HP will e-mail Vista compliant drivers on a phone call.
I won't use Dell, so I cannot address their build outs, but Gateway 2000/MPC use MY specs on the systems that I submit PO's for. If I dont want a specific program (ie Norton security) then the machine is shipped ready for my install of Corporate Sophos. Not a big issue.
Unless you want to keep Win98 or XP, then its time to figure out how it works in your environment. I know some of the propellor heads will tout Linux, but to the common end user, you might as well put something in Mandarin Chinese in front of them. I do the back end work, and support the software that I need to keep running.
I also do work for several different charities, and have had 2 Ubuntu laptops donated. I had to turn them down, as they were simply not compatible enough with the current in place systems to integrate completely enough.
