Re: Is anybody here getting a smart car?

I had one of the earlier ones for a while. Economical 55+mpg(UK) if driven sensibly. Run high octane fuel if possible for better fuel consumption. There was also a diesel available in Europe. Make sure you get the Auto conversion (It's cheap).
There is a major tuning market in the UK for them. More info try www.smartclub.co.uk

The real downside was the amount of storage space. Not much more than an LT.
Passengers were well looked after though with plenty of legroom. Anyone who drove it was very surprised by it. It happily kept up with traffic on the motorways (70mph limit) and top speed was about 85mph. It was a bit noisy at these speeds though.
Cornering stablity was OK once wider wheels were fitted. If I remember correctly the early turbo's were liable to failure, but not too expensive.

The above info is relevant to the earlier models. I believe things may have changed considerably now but the owners club will be happy to update you.

Re: Is anybody here getting a smart car?

Just my luck, they opened up a Smart Car dealership not to far from me ~ 10 minutes.

Nearest BMW dealer- 75 miles into the heart of NYC or across statelines!

Not for me, I'm too f***ing fat and drive way too fast! I'll keep my American Pickup (built in Canada and Mexico by Dodge)

Re: Is anybody here getting a smart car?

I bought one back in 2004. I get 48mpg have plenty of room, Heated Leather seats, Sunroof and all the other goodies. I am usually first off the line at traffic lights and the gap gets bigger.. Shes good for about 130mph too. Oh yeah, she is the VW Jetta TDI version of the smart car.

Re: Is anybody here getting a smart car?

There is also a sports version, topless, wonderful little thing.
Saw a test crash on TV. They slammed a Smart car into a solid block of concreate - NO damage to the area where the driver or pasengers legs are!!!
BUT as they said - you would be dead - the human body can not stop at that speed!

Re: Is anybody here getting a smart car?

Andy,

I may be sitting at the source, but I too have to wait.

As far as service is concerned: It will be world class just like our MB service. And for you, concierge service to and from your home is included. And of course a free car wash every time you come in for service.

BMW Motorrad of Houston North was a textbook study of how not to do it. It's really sad.

I must admit, I am amazed that you guys are taking to the car!
I thought you were into large cars that side of the pond.
Over here, many people see Smarts cars as a bit of a joke. Not myself, I would have one if I used a car that much.

Re: Is anybody here getting a smart car?

They had to move into the US market as the European market has about reached saturation. They were very novel and quite economical when they first came out but there are far better vehicles available now for around the same price - and with 4 seats and a trunk to boot! 50 mpg is nothing when my son gets 74 out of his Passat TDI, and 60 out of his Honda hybrid (company car)..... especially when he can carry the whole family plus luggage in both.

Personally I wouldn't put a Smart up against a Suburban in even a mild fender bender.

Objects in mirror may be disappearing faster than they seem...

Yeah what he said.... We do need to move to smaller cars in the U.S.A. but we should be smart about it. Check out the specs on the new tdi diesels that will be coming here in late 2008. Extremely clean, quiet, powerful and hellacious mpg.

Re: Is anybody here getting a smart car?

There must be a conversion error involved here.

74 mpg is a little above 3 liter per 100 kilometer. The European Passat Diesel is rated at 6.9 liter per 100 Kilometer. My guess is that real live consumption is about 45 miles per US gallon. That is outstanding for a car of that size and power.

For now, SMART has no real competition in the US, if they catch on (and so-far it looks that way) all the other micro-cars from around the world will be here too. Than the real competition begins... My bet is on small (but not micro) common rail turbo diesel cars.

Re: Is anybody here getting a smart car?

Wolfgang,
I am sure he will chime in and explain. They use the bigger gallon (imperial) and that helps. I bet his son Has one of the newer diesels that are not availeable here yet. Probably oct-nov of this year. According to my local rep they are rated around 55-57 mpg US. That would mean in real life people would get 50-60 mpg US gallon. I have been running a TDI since 1999 and have met people who get much better mileage than the norm. So, 70-74 on a imperial gallon maybe possible. This new generation diesel comes coupled with a 6 speed automatic transmission with no torque converter.
Andy, I know you are a fan of the tdi, You should take another look at what is coming around the corner this fall.

Re: Is anybody here getting a smart car?

I dont think I will buy one until they come with either 4wheel drive or all wheel drive due to my driveway and location. I just got back from France & Italy and did rent a smart car forfour, (4 passenger) I thought it was very comfortable and appeared to have quite a bit of room in the back and on the Autostrada I was able to hold it at 130kmh and it had a lot more to give. I dont know if it was the cars lighting or the signage, but I had a tough time reading the road signs.

The forfour is discontinued, as in no longer available in europe or here. It had great reviews.

As for the signage...mayby it was the language...

Yes, I am a fan of the TDI's but as it looks there will be no real ultracompact in the US anytime soon. BTW, Who says I am going to sell one of my two diesels? LOL

Anyway, since we are operating a Passat TDI as well, I too believe there is some conversion error in those 70+ mpg . 70+ kmg (Kilometers per imperial gallon) I'd be inclined to believe. Especially with the new diesels. 70mpg imperial or US is somewhat too good to be true (for me)

Just quoting the figure off his onboard computer last time he visited. Yes, UK gallons are larger - but that still works out at about 60 per US gallon (approx).

I wouldn't believe any manufacturer rating, ever. My old Volvo was supposed to manage 35 highway, but never got more than 28, My Ford Explorer was only supposed to average 18, but we frequently got well over 25. And so on.

I'm with you on small diesels being the way forward. Incredible mpg, extremely low emissions and they'll even run on the fat that your fries are cooked in. We just have to get people into smaller cars and accept that 0-60 times of 5 seconds are really unnecessary when the traffic is only crawling along at 5 mph anyway! On the other hand, I love my BMW 5 series for long distance driving when the weather is too bad for the bike..... (only averaging about 2k miles/yr in it at the moment ) ..... and I have had as much as 40 mpg (UK) out of it. Pretty good for such a big car/engine.

After hearing of its deficiencies from owners and from my own experience in a test drive, the smart isn't so smart.

The Honda Fit is a much better value.

The first two Smart Cars I saw were at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale this January. They each sold for around $30,000, used.
Now that's definitely not smart.

The first two Smart Cars I saw were at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale this January. They each sold for around $30,000, used.
Now that's definitely not smart.
Smarts in Dallas are going for sticker from the dealer (if you ordered early). Used Smarts are going for about $3000 over sticker ($18K-$21K). Me thinks there are some smart people taking advantage of some Smart wannabes.

A Honda Fit, maxed out with every possible option is something like $17K.

I'm waiting for Ford to bring the Pinafarina (R.I.P. Andrea) designed Euro Focus to the US.

You're spot on again, Jeff. You're paying about twice what you should for what you get. If you buy a Fit, you pay the same and you only loose a few miles per gallon--and get a real car. The Smart is so underpowered that it can be dangerous trying to merge with traffic moving at 70mph. The "Smart" car should really be called the "Not-so-Smart" car!

So sorry you paid way too much for the very little that you got!
